Hi yes I think that's right one but not 100% as totally wrong engine layout, it is after the air filter on the big hose, it has a short black pipe about 3" long 2 1/2" diameter, it has a wire clipped into the sensor on the side of the tube, the tube is held to the rest of the pipe with hook and cam type clips either side so no tools needed to take it out, he could then carefully spray carb cleaner down into the tube onto the thin sensor wire to clean the sooty deposits of it, the best way though is to unscrew the sensor out of the tube but he will need the correct security bit for that, although after the cleaning it is not guaranteed to work better, I cleaned mine..... no difference! best bet is too just unplug and drive to see if it is better then at least he can eliminate or celebrate the problem either way.

Hope that helps

Steve

fuel filter very easy to change, its under the car, approx at the B pillar on the offside (at least on RHD). literally a 15 min job with a new filter and a couple of spanners. i would lean towards fuel starvation too. ask him to add some injector cleaner or fuel conditioner into the tank next time he fills and see if that helps. the maf sensor as others suggest is a failure item, not one that gradually deteriorates. as other have suggested he should warm up the engine and then take it off. if performance improves he'll need a new one. if it doesn't then that's not the problem. cleaning does help in many cases but its pot luck.

also from monaco to portugal he'll be driving along the cote d'azur through the south of france which is where i think datatek lives? maybe PM him and ask if he can suggest somewhere nearby for your friend to have it looked at or for parts.
