P38 missing audible warnings

Hi all, from Leeds, and thanks for having me!

Having had an ex-navy Series 2A 2.3 LWB diesel back in the 80s, and a County 110 V8 in the 90s, my late-life crisis had me hankering after another 2A.

So, defying logic, I have just bought a 2001 Range Rover P38 2.5 DHSE Auto. Well, it IS a Land Rover - it's got badges front and back, to prove it! I love it, and, although I've only had it a few days, it's already impressing me with its fuel consumption (according to the trip computer).

I'm hoping someone can help me with my first little niggle.

When the indicators operate there is no audible confirmation - I assume there should be? The light in the instrument panel works.

I can set the Over Speed Limit function, and it works with a visual warning in the Message Centre, but, again, there is no audible warning (a chime?), and according to the handbook, there should be.

If anyone can help, I'd be most grateful.

Youll get the natives jumping if you say your MPG on the computers right, (it might be but dont open that one up)

As for the PING that your missing on the back of the dial cluster there is (or should be) a speaker to produce the PING some people diconnect it to stop it PING PING PINGING
try looking there??

Sorry to bother you with further questions...

If the speaker's disconnected, would that also stop the sound when the indicators operate? Am I right in assuming that there should be a sound then too?

If, as you say people disconnect it, does that mean it's not too difficult to get at? I normally hate attacking instrument panels!

Sorry to all, I know what you're saying about trip computers. Up until recently, I checked my various vehicles' fuel consumption in a spreadsheet, based on litres to fill the tank and miles on the speedo. Maybe I should return to that!!

The instrument panel is very easy to remove just a case of six screws and a few plugs at the back. however once youve opened the car take the key back to the house and leave it there you must not turn the ignition on with all this crap unplugged or it will have a FIT!!

once removed the speaker is large and black you cant miss it. Its easy to get to and will be pretty obvious if its the problem. If it hasnt been disconnected try unplugging it and plugging it back in.

p.s might be worth going out tonight and checking all of your dash bulbs are working great chance to replace any duds when your fiddling with it anyway

I did have a look today, but I couldn't see any screws. I was wondering whether the trim panel below the instrument cluster had to be removed...I will have another look for six screws.

I'll check the dash bulbs! Thanks for that advice too!

Right the screws... If you put your hand through the top of the steering wheel and feel the top of the black plastic surround they are two up there. You will also need to remove the panel below the steering column this is the large panel about where your knees will be this is done with 4x bolts or screws. Carefull here as if it's not been removed before there may be a vent hose connected to it. Just a light tug will release that no trouble.

Ok now at the base of the black plastic surround you should see two more screws which I forgot to mention. Undo those littke buggers and the plastic surround will lift out.

DO THIS SLOWLY YOU NEED TO UNCLIP THE FUEL CAP RELEASE BUTTON WIRE!

Now you will have the cluster. There are I belive only 4x screws holding that in you'll need a long Philips for these as they are fiddly. Once removed disconnect plugs and there you have it.

And yes the indecators should make a nice click clock noise

Let me know how you get on.. This was written from memory so might be 1 or 2 screws I've missed out but same process!

Thanks for all your help and advice. Speaker was disconnected!

I've connected it, but someone else has warned me that the gongs and everything will probably drive me mad, so I've put a switch in, so I have the option to turn it off easily.
