P38 LOW RANGE SELECTION

Thanks guys. The window wasn't making nasty noises, and today the dash info centre said 'Window not set', which it wasn't saying yesterday, so I'll start there.

New symptoms for the gearbox: Today I visited the car again to pay my deposit, and had a fiddle around. The beeper and flashing warning light kept going, pausing occasionally, presumably when the system had completed one cycle of trying. BUT I dared to put the car in gear in the low range slot, and it moved in every gear - so SEEMS to be selecting low range! \but the dash info centre was saying 'SELECT NEUTRAL' - does this collection of symptoms mean anything to anyone now?

Is the gearbox in danger of exploding and taking out the High range? I only use low range very, very rarely, but would like to have it working properly. More, I don't want the high range gears I have to stop working!
Be careful faffing with it until you've paid for it!
They could refuse any after care or remboursement if they think you may have caused a problem before completing the deal....
These things should have been tested before you agreed any figure with the seller....it could get sticky..... Or even stuck as the case may be....

They were, I pointed out the transfer problem the first time I looked it over. Yesterday was me making my final decision, and they've agreed an after care period. Thanks though.

Phew... Would hate to think a finger pointing session would come from the seller. Ask them what they are going to do about the hi low problem so your all clear. Not teaching to suck eggs sorry;)

Could just be a connector or low volts but then again ...

We're all addicts here but we've all been burned by these cars. I'm still not sure why I have mine.

It's a disease.

Once p38's get under your skin , they never get out..

Kind of like scabies ;)

They just fester! ;)

That is sound advice. Most of these cars are getting to an age where they have issues. One showing plenty will have more hidden for sure. Budget £1000 for remedial work unless you're just going to run it into the ground. If you cannot do the spanner work yourself then your pockets will be emptied quickly.

Low battery volts can give spurious warnings although the Window Not Set is because the window has not been run all the way down and back up until the message disappears after a battery disconnect. Not sure about the Select Neutral. Could just be low volts or problem with transfer box radio motor or XYZ switch adjustment or could be something else.

These cars have an ECU for each area, not just the engine one. All link into the BECM, the brain under the driver's seat. Gearbox one is under the passenger seat.

Aye most P38's fell/fallen out of the circle of maintenance so the minimum is expended to keep them on the road, my 2001 is a prime example of when little jobs just pile up into big ones.

The same thing is happening with the L322 and it certainly happened with the RRC.

Luckily there are a few that were/are maintained you just have to fish them out!! ;)

So what we are saying here is, likely disuse = siezed transfer motor, possibly transistor burnt out, not a major job?
Not a major job if you are fit enough to get underneath. A secondhand ECU if needed is not expensive on Ebay.
My neighbour was diagnosed with Parkinsons a few years ago, with the meds they have now he is doing well and still working full time on the farm. Bonne courage.

Thanks - I'm not, so I get an even less supple man with a hoist to do these things for me - oh he will be delighted to hear I've bought a P38!
I now have some meds and nurse and physio are hurrying around after neurology created a massive delay, so moving forward slowly...thanks for the wishes :)

No worries - he handed me the keys and said to go have another look around, he'd be there in a moment! So I thought, if it goes bang in his yard, not my problem! :D

Okay, now my insurance has doubled...it's not the business use, can't be the Parkinson's (legally), can't figure it out - but I'm getting refused cover because of the modifications :(

Where are you located ? happy to lend a hand from time to time if you are not too far away.
Ta lads. When it actually went into gear but the info centre sulked about it, I thought it might be something like this.
Haven't actually come to terms with the Parkinsons thing yet, early days, just started meds, seeing nurse & physio soon, wondering about the chances of a blue badge on a P38... :p

What mods does she have? Can they be removed, so she's no longer modded. Not sure what age you are , but if 50 or over have you tried Saga?
Best of luck with the Parkinson's. I hope you stay well for a very long time.

Changed to coil springs and an uprated ECU - two essential mods, without which I wouldn't have bought it!
Saga refused to cover me, and wouldn't say why!
So now looking at £658 a year with Admiral
Thanks for the best wishes :)
