P38 Key Fob Failure

The colour difference between Key 1 & 2 is very slight and hard to see. One is a slightly darker shade of grey. Why they didn't make one a completely different colour completely is crazy.

You can definatly tell mine apart - my fob is scratched and worn, whilst the missus' fob is prestine and shiney - wonder why :confused::confused:

You can have up to 4 keys fobs for the car - I asume so that the kids can drive the Rangy as well - as if I would lets my kids near my Range Rover, the missus doesn't even get a go :cool:

Dead right, my sons a mechanic, I keep getting "dad if you insured me on the Rangie." Don't know what he wants as thats as far as the conversation ever gets :)
 
Both keys are number coded. 1, 2 etc. If you dupplicate a key number it disables the key with that previously allocated number. This I understand and know to be correct. Both my keys are original, No's 1 & 2, so the above replies about number dupplication are not valid in regard to my EKA failure problem. Although I now work in Hydraulics, my previous job for many years was in Defence Electronics, so I do understand something about electronic workings - but to be honest, the P38 is something else!
 
If this thing ever gets working again; oldest daughter want's to learn to drive in it. Quite frankly - if she can push it down the road 50 yards, she can have it!
 
OK, here it is - new key arrives at Trinity Motors (my local dealer) - they don't phone and tell me, I phone them on the off-chance that it's arrived! With new key, number 3, I unlock door manually and whilst holding the key in the quarter unlock position press the open button and then release button pressure and return key to the top start position in the door lock. Remove key and as if by magic all functions work perfectly.
What is impressive is the speed at which the key arrived at Trinity Motors - ordered on the 21st June by them, the parcel I collected the key in was post dated 22nd June (From Germany). What is disapointing is that I had to chase them on 26th June to see if the key had arrived; which obviously it had. It's a bit like the phone call I'm still waiting on from the Service department last Saturday by Trinity Motors!
Over the moon to get problem sorted, but wouldn't give Trinity any more business.
 
I do believe there's a guy here, that fixes them, and has all the gear to do it, don't know his name though, but its about 1/2 the price, and its a fast turn around...... other than that cant help
 
Yep,

I rebuild key fobs.

There's an easy solution to programming the two fobs.

Program key 1 first. Start the car with key one.

Program key two & then start the car with key two.

You then need to program key one again, test by unlocking & locking the car with the fob. do the two actions, unlock then lock. Then unlock & lock the vehicle with the fob of key two.

Programming done.

But then if you have 2 two key one's or 2 key two's then it's impossible to have them both active at the same time.
 
i've got mine insured with my business insurance, i'll probably lose my keys soon;) it's looking a bit grubby now!!!
 
Finally got mine sorted. My dealer ordered me another key but this time a different one. Having been told though that key 1 and key 2 are a slightly different cover, they are both exactly the same. However the new one still has the sticker on the back saying "key 2" which is a bit of a giveaway at the moment.

All's well that ends well. All I have to do now is sort the brakes, fix a few oil leaks, renew the suspension air bags and fix my petrol cap cover and it's sorted. Until something else goes wrong. It's taking some time to get used to the fact that there are things, somewhere, wrong. With my daily car I would probably have a nervous breakdown knowing there is something wrong with it, no matter how small. With the Rangey it's taking some time to adjust to the fact that that IS the fact. There will probably always be something wrong with it.

It's just such a great car though and a fantastic amount of kit for the money. At Kirton the other weekend it strolled down a slope and crawled back up the other side that two fully kitted up Discos turned back from saying it wasn't possible (quite a sweet moment). It also waddled up one slope in 4th without so much as a flash of its TC light that a Defender had slithered up and down a half dozen times before giving up (an even sweeter moment). Utterly fab.
