has anyone ever changed the gearbox filter on their p38? my 2000 vouge auto has done 70,000 now, and i presume it hasnt been done yet.
is it easy to do? ive read the guide on rangerovers.net, but you cant beat hearing about personal experience.

Not a bad job to do, shop around for the kit though prices vary a lot.... tiz about a 3/4 hour job, that includes stopping for a few beers

If i remember right, there was a nit or something in the way that i had to remove first??? was a long time ago, but im sure it will get in your way too, and then you'll think, ahh that's what he was talking about, but i don't think it was any biggy

Did mine at the weekend.

Points I came across

1. Close eyes when removing the protective cover over the gearbox or you'll get a face full of dirt.

2. Find yourself a T27 bit to undo the nuts holding the filter on, other wise you'll be hunting around for a hour trying to find one and swearing a lot about how you can find every other size but the one you want. :D

That is a really good bit of helpful advice. Being deep into something and not having the correct tool to carry on, is the bain of every mechanic.

Maybe it would be helpful if manufacturers listed the tools required to do a specific job. I seem to recall years ago workshop manuals did this. Or maybe it's just my memory playing tricks with me.

I have a few Japanese worksop manuals, they all list tool requirements. The P38 owners handbook doesn't even list bulb types, so no list of tool requirements should not be a surprise:(:(:(
 
I'd be tempted to leave it alone, controversial maybe, but if the box isn't giving you problems then distrubing it could cause you no end of grief. It doesn't sound like you are going to be doing high mielage with it so is it worth it?
 
it is part of the major service i think, so should be done, i'm doing mine soon so fingers grossed itll be easy, got to do diffs aswell and it looks like rear crank seal is heamoraging!!!

oh what joy!!!!

I was thinking of doing a few jobs on my old girl, so just "searched" filters and saw some useful posts

So who's gonna start the "tools needed" thread ? Ideally specific to each job, and probably needs to be moderated to avoid the "buy a set of X just in case" posts.
