Hi this is my first post plz b gentle : )
Iv got a 1999 p38 2.5 and brought it 2 days ago, on the way home I realised it wasn't goin into 4th gear on the auto box,

Iv bin to a specialist who did a diagnostic and said the gear box was in limp mode, after was reset it started goin into 4th reluctantly but every gear change is quite lumpy, and when it is started from cold sometimes can't get drive inless I put it in D and give it some revs, iv booked it in for gearbox oil n filter change but was wondering if any 1 else has had this problem or can shed some light on the matter, many thanks

Sounds like it's clogged up in the filter and valve block. See how you go after filter and oil change but you may need to do a couple if it's really bad. Sticking some Lucas in it will help to free the valve block but only do that on second change. Get it changed and see what you have if it improves drive it for a week or so then change oil again and stick the Lucas in. £40.00 for TF and Lucas is better than a new box if it works.

Thanks mate that sounds about right, been stressin thinking the worst lol, is it right that the solonoid sticks on them aswel in cold weather because we have had nothing but snow since I picked her up

Sound advice there from Wammers. You have to do a few changes as you can't get all the oil out of the torque converter by draining. You have to dilute.

Hi iv tried the gearbox service is a little bit better but still lumpy and stays in gear a little to long before changing, do u think its worth another service or just bite the bullet and put a new box in ? Any help really appreciated

Do as first advised then see what you have, before you start thinking of a new box.

Hi I have now done the second service and gear changes are a lot better only problem is when the engine is cold I select drive and it revs like its in neutral but then if I give it a foot full it will slam into gear it is then up n down gears for first half a mile then it drives perfect like there's no fault, head blag lol

Did you refill as per the RAVE procedures.....as you could be a little low on level...

Needs to be checked, engine running, Box cold, Go through the gears and check level....

The MY's with an under bonnet dipstick need to be checked in Neutral. Yours being a '99 won't have a dipstick....but you need to fill till you get a dribble from the fill plug hole....

To be honest mate I took it to my local specialist so not sure, as I havnt got a dipstick is there a inspection window on side of sump to check level, when u say fill til i get a dribble from the fill hole do u mean fill right to the top, sorry mate I ain't no mechanic as u can tell lol

Ignore that last post have just got underneath and had a look can see what u mean now by the oil should dribble out the top overflow wen filled to correct amount, will try that first thing tomoz mornin, has any 1 ever heard that this is sum times a voltage problem, forgot to say aswel some times it will cut out when select gear when it is cold
