P38 Gearbox Fault

Whip off the top engine cover and they are the rubber pipes that go to each injector. I am sure they are only a push fit and the hose should be available from any motor factors. Its a real simple job, and will be some of the way to sorting your problem.

Ok so ive dropped 50 ltr in the tank this morning and she seems to start fine now, looks like the air has gone from the pipes........

Just the gearbox issue to deal with, hopefully this will get rectified this afternoon.

Cheers for all your help and I will let you all know.

Peter

P.S. if anybody ever needs some serious cleaning email me via my website www.999cleaners.co.uk

thanks again

I had similar issues with my 2000 P38 DHSE 2.5. Turned out to be the fuel filter which was clogged up therefore fuel starvation and reluctant to accelerate or change up. Also it stalled several times as it could not suck enough fuel through to tick over. Might help and its cheap and quick to do.

I've topped up the transmission oil, 2 days ago, but not changed it or the filter.. Could it be something electrical or does it sound like the filter etc if so where would I find this filter and how do I go about changing it etc???

Thanks

Yes it could be electrical, have look at the selector indicator switch on side of box. If you are not getting indication of which gear your in on dash this will either need replacing or they can be stripped and cleaned out. If you know what you are doing. Besides putting info on dash it tells the ECU what mode your in 1-2-3 or D. If it's not working no info is going to the ECU.

my 2,5 is doing the exact same thing and she just had a major service with a very reputable l/r garage and all her pressures were/are what they should be and too honest i dont see how keeping the tank full should help especially scince the filter is brand new,

one thing that mine does is all electrics go down completely and you cant even switch the hazards on, and then as if a miricle after a few minutes she turns and then able to drive away, this usually happens within the 1st mile of the journey,
while she was in for her service the gearbox oil was changed, also i have not felt any difference in performance and put the box into sports and booted the hell out of her i felt the gearing going up and then also braked to bring the gears down again,
then when removing the key the msg gearbox fault still appears,
the garage has said i must bring her in and they will run the diagnostics on her,has this brought up any thing when you plugged yours in?
also like normal this always happens at the wrong ****ing time of the month

Just two penneth

Gearbox Fault on the dash often comes on when you have a low voltage from the battery or the battery goes flat? You could get a diagnostic chap to look at it. (worth doing anyway) The car may be running in get home mode? and needs a reset?
On the Ascroft Transmission web site they describe how to change the oil in your gearbox. From the model year it looks like you may have the type of box that doesn't have a conventional filler pipe in the engine bay.

i got it fixed,, yehaw.

this time for me it was simple enough, when i brought it to on&off road repairs,
told john the symptoms and thinking about it now i feel like a bit of a fool,
what gave it away was that some time either the windows or the radio needed to be reset and the place to go was the battery,
we first checked the terminals and hey presto they were loose, not loose enough to pop off but loose enough to twist around, according to john he says the the p38 are notorius for the finiky connections and even a small bump on the road will set it off, after a quick clean off the corrosion with some sand paper and 1 new terminal eye and what looked like vasseline on the terminals off she ran,
i ran her the whole day purposely switching here off and on at trafic lights and about 100miles she ticked over every time.
i hope that this helps you

cheers:D

Thats good to hear Johnny........

However I am still having a nightmare myself......Turning over and running is ok, but I still have an issue with the gearbox fault. Here's what ive done this far

Changed the transmission fluid
Battery tested and OK - Alternator not what it should though thats now sorted
Fuse box taken apart, checked and put back together
Large terminal block under header tank checked and OK
terminals under both seats checked and OK
Diagnostic check says there is a problem with the Torque converter and the independant landrover garage that checked it said it will cost around £700 supply and fit but they normally put a recon box in at the same time and this will cost all in all 1400 finest english pounds............. Surely it cant be that bad, i have seen on other threads/forums that people have reconnected earth straps that have become loose etc can anybody shed any light on this please.

Thanks

It was just what he told me.... Then the boss came out and gave me the options and also said they could start straight away if I wanted them to because they were fairly quite!!!

yes bet they could for that price, i would want to make sure it was befor i would consider paying that out. how sure are you? frome what you have said i am not so sure, as it does not do it all the time, try putting jump lead from earth to body befor you start it just to see if it makes any diffrence.

I will try that but it doesn't always do that on start up sometimes when you set of and sometimes when you've been on the move for 10 or 20 mins or 2......it really is so random... To be honest im not really that sure that is the problem, ive been to another garage today but his machine wouldnt go into the transmission part of the computer!!!!

Does anybody know what connections there are in and around the transmission that may be loose??????

Thanks in advance......

hi peter

man that is a lot of money for something that you not sure is the correct solution, from the sounds of thing you have done a hell of a lot to check this out, and here comes the classic saying, get a nother opinion if you not sure,£700 is a lot.
but just as a comparison i had a grand cherokee 4,7l v8 and her box was on the way out but here the funny thing no main dealer linders toyota did not want to touch the box unless i had € 5000- deposit, yes, just because they did not whant to warrant the opening and then more so to frighten the **** out of me.

so 700 is expensive but be sure you have tried all the "cheap fixes first" brfore comitting
and i did a lot of driving today in my p38 and not a bother,
good luck
john

Hi pete,
I have been reading the thread, i had the exact same fault with the gearbox message coming on and the selector display going off and no sport control and as if it was stuck in 3rd gear, i changed all the multi plugs in the harness that i could find, the problem stayed.
I fixed the fault by finding the fault in the fuse box under the bonnet, the one on the drivers side, you say you have stripped it down, but how far did you go, to find the fault the two circuit boards have to be parted, it is an easy job to do if you can use a soldering iron, since i did mine it has not missed a beat once, that was three months ago, it used to do it every time i drove it.
If you look on the web site Range Rovers it is fantastic for fault diagnostics and repairs and it has a good set of photo's or the repair being carried out with instructions.
i did the repair my self, it cost nothing - considering i had quotes of £100's to strip the box.

Hi.

My car use to red line in the revs when on cruise control at 90km/h. It also use to go from 4th gear down to 2nd on hills. Had a new alternator fitter and now is gears down normally. I would suggest you had a look at the batt, alternator. My car also sometimes gave the gearbox message with slow gear changes in town. All seems to be sorted now.

Hi, only just joined Landyzone, and just seen this thread. I had similar problems with my P38 some time ago, and replaced the X,Y selector switch on the gearbox with a second hand one and touch wood, have had no problems since.
