P38 EAS CAusing me REAL Grief Please HELP !

RAVE:
Air suspension warning lamp
This amber lamp is located in the instrument pack.
The lamp will be constantly illuminated when driving at
high ride height and will flash when vehicle is at
extended height. The lamp will also illuminate if a fault
within the system is detected.


Extended ride height
This position is achieved if chassis is grounded
leaving wheel or wheels unsupported. Initial ECU
reaction is to lower (deflate) affected springs. After a
timed period the ECU detects no height change, it
therefore reinflates springs to extended profile in an
attempt to regain traction. The position will be held for
10 minutes, after which time the vehicle will
automatically return to standard ride height.
Pressing the down switch will lower vehicle 20 mm to
high profile.
If vehicle speed exceeds 56 km/h (35 mph) the
vehicle will immediately lower to standard ride height.
This speed could be achieved, for example, by
wheelspin.

Hi Gents

Just been sat at work thinking about this troublesome EAS issue and have a couple more questions for you if you could oblige / humour me please :)

As the truck symbol on the dash with the upwards arrow on it seems to be synonymous with my system going into fault each time (ie it comes on then maybe 10 mins later we have the lockout) my question is what actually turns that light on ? ie what signal is being received to say raise the suspension ?

Secondly as a temporary measure as I was to be away at work for a month I disconnected the 4 airbag pipes from the valve block, and also disconnected the 2 plugs in the valve block / compressor housing box to stop the solenoids being activated and to stop the compressor running (thought this was a good idea ? ) I did not like the idea of putting a 'T' piece in each line as this would basically back pressure the seals in the block and I wondered if the valves were actuated what the net result would be ?

Anyway I disconnected the 4 pipes and fitted the 4 'emergency' Schraders valves and pumped her up using my garage compressor, the idea to set her about 80 cm from floor to wheel arch and then its fine for the wife for the month I'm at work :) However when I pumped up the front (in particular the problem was much less at the back) right to 80 Cm then raised the front left to 80cm the front right had gone up to about 92 cm so I let air our and back to 80 cm then the front left down to 75 cm !! and so it went on up down up down till I eventually got it somewhere near !

My question is why should the manual raising of one air bag so dramatically affect the opposite side as the wiring disconnected etc I would think that self leveling etc is disabled ? the fronts even has small effect on the back manual set heights and visa versa ?

The height changes you are seing are simply weight transfer, pump up one corner and it transfers weight to or from other corners. Each corner should be raised a bit at a time.
All the other replies are irrelevant as the EAS is inoperative.
 
Thanks a lot for that, I thought I was going crazy with all plugs disconnected and the car doing what seemed like self levelling !

Makes total sense now and I'm happy with the situation (well the car on manual lift mode) will be a lot more happy when I have it all back working as it should.

Looking forwards to getting home and checking the kick plate plugs and the earths to see if they are the root cause !

Well back in rainy drizzling Ireland and trying to fix this EAS :confused:

Thanks to Wammers and Datatek for the advice so far and led me to the probable cause of my issues the plug and socket in the footwell kick panel was damp and has verdigree hence a clean up and things looked to be getting better but I have another bit of a problem maybe you guys will be able to help ??

I am using the eas unlocker suite from RS and I have literally used my schrader valves to each airbag to raise and lower the car to the various levels and then used the RS software to read the height shown on each level sensor as per the attached This was checked a few times as it was a lot different to my settings as read in the calibrate screen ! :eek:

Such as
high was 154, 154, 135 & 135
standard was 123, 124, 109, 110
Low was 107, 107, 97, 97
Access 80, 80, 75, 75 :confused:

:decision:SO unperturbed I decided that I needed to re-calibrate to my actual measured figures so wrote the attached ones in the the lower section of the calibrate page and 'Wrote' all and then selected get the figures and they were as written :D now connected up my eas pipes and set it all to run as normal and the car looked great at standard height , access height etc as driven to this height using the RS software GREAT.

Disconnected the laptop and tried the switch on the dash and the car went really high so measures and it was well above the 830mm for the high setting ??( nearly 890 :eek:) so plugged the laptop in again and checked the level readings in the calibrate screen and they have all reverted to the original settings ??

I have done the same exercise a few time and end up getting the same problem of reverting back ?? can someone help or tell me if I'm doing something wrong and not actually saving my new heights ?

Is there a special way to disconnect the laptop ? I just stop the communication with the EAS and RS software then unplug the cable (always worked before and not caused problems but admit this is the 1st time I have loaded level values ?)

Why would it seem to work ok from the RS software and yet fail to the original settings once the RS software is disconnected ?

If the items marked red were the rear sensors they are out of range for that setting. Rear sensors at extended height must be between 105 and 150. Any setting written to the ECU out of range will cause it to revert to a stored preset.

The ones in RED were for vehicle height at 830mm ORIGINAL and locked into the EAS

what I have measured for the same height is 112 118 115 116 which are withing your range settings and these are the figures I have tried to upload but it reverts back to to the old ones ??

If they are rears that cannot be, they are out of range for the rear sensors at high height.

Rears.

High 105 to 150.

Standard 85 to 130.

Motorway 75 to 120.

Access 50 to 100.

Fronts.

High 120 to 180.

Standard 95 to 150.

Motorway 75 to 140.

Access 50 to 100.

Unless they are the ECU presets and you have done something wrong disconnecting EASunlock. But i find it hard to believe the presets would be out of range unless they are designed to do that to throw a fault. But there is further movement available if the car is grounded maybe that is to take the extra into account.
