P38 DSE ...how to get 39mpg

Thanks for the comments, most I read with a smile on my face. It's good to see we can get a parliamentry style debate going with equal numbers on both sides of the fence.

If you're not interested than fine, but for those of us who believe in the green badge and want to run a green badge on a budget, then i thought you'd be interested. I suppose the 'haters' have the misconception that fuel will one day go back to 50p a litre and everyone will will want to own a p38 when that day comes.

However I'm a beliver that as the price of fuel continues to soar we can only assume the number of oval green badges we see on the road will slowly diminish until we all are forced to driving micras and yaris's. Yes theres new engines coming out with the new models that can achieve these figures easily... do you want to enjoy the benefits of £450 RFL pa for cars that are more suited to the hard tarmac? (2wd Freelander?)

I'm a LRO diehard like the rest of us, and I brought a P38 because I wanted a proper off roader...an iconic landmark in the RR evolution and of course.... the new challenges that come every week with new electric problems...not being able to unlock the car and to find it some mornings keeping warm by hugging the floor. Most of all though for the green badge.

You'll be pleased to know my experiments over with everything fitted back with the addition of SAMCO hoses and a green filter.

My girls back on the road doing the usual 28mpg now, I'm driving like Ive just passed my test.. still paying 210 for RFL and loving every minute of it.

I'll make the most of it while I can still afford it,

If that is the reading off the display, then you are dreaming. With the powerbox fitted, it over reads considerably. 28 to 29mpg on my display with the powerbox equals an actual 23 to 24 mpg on a brim to brim check:)

Brim to brim checks...Imagine all the dead weight you're carrying round? Diesel with a SG of 0.94....(figures from shell) is near enough 1kg a litre.

With the PSI box opened up theres the three transitor pins you can move around for max power/little bit of power/factor set/max economy?
 
aerofabrique,glad to see you have a thick skin,you need it on this site no good getting all arsey like some do.mpg is immaterial with a p38,its running costs that is important.my running costs are quite low,its stuck on the drive most of the year.
 
You want to know how my 4.6 running costs are kept low? I run a renault twingo in town for under 30 miles trips. When i drive the 4.6, it's like i stole it!!

It was an interesting experiment and what the hell is wrong with that, guys? Despite the sniping the OP showed that a lardy vehicle CAN return decent mpg if needs be. He did NOT say that this is how he intended to continue or even suggest that anyone else here should follow suit. Heck, isn't anyone here impressed at the capability of the RR if push came to shove?

And any real Landy 'enthusiast' who thinks that swapping to a Yaris or a Polo is a 'logical move' or the answer to everything is a Knob!

The joy of this site is the variety of approaches we adopt to fettle our Landies and to push back the frontiers of ignorance, and our ability to share this info.

As has been said elsewhere: if you don't like what's been written, then don't read it! It works both ways, guys!

As for the ECU stuff, I think I need more info on this. Not sure that I would want to spend a lot on a new ECU or remapped one only in order to gain better mpg (and save back the money it cost me) ... but to get better performance with optimised mpg, then gimme gimme.

Yes I will hold my hands up and say my post could have been more constructive in its content but that's why I like this forum its not stuffy and it has plenty of banter.

Fuel will never go down in price unless the population is decimated, however as a cost relative to income petrol is not that much different to 50 years ago for me and my first car did 18mpg if I was lucky so the P38 averaging 24mpg seems quite good to me:D It's also a question how how many miles a year you do, I do about 15 to 20K kilometres per year, 10/12K miles or so, maybe a Yaris would save me £500 or so a year on fuel but it cost me £1K a year or more in depreciation and I would have neither the comfort nor the safety of the P38, not to mention the ability to climb out of the valley to go shopping when it snows.:D

I was having a fookin' bad day and thought I spotted a destructive bloodfest developing that might detract from the innovative efforts of the OP. Worse than that, I jumped to the defence of someone who didn't need my 'elp. (Don't you just hate it when that happens?!)

So, I'll take myself to the naughty corner ... suitably chastised, tail between my legs, whimpering meekly "I am not worthy ... I am not worthy ...." :eek:

Well said Clarkie. What a boring feckin post.
As you say, just another poser who wants to run a big motor on a Yaris budget.
Why not strip the complete interior out bar the drivers seat and have no more than 5 litres of fuel in the tank at any one time to cut down on the weight.
Run it on free , used veggie oil free from the local chippy and save even more money !!

Ah well each to their own but personally cant see the point of having a p38 if you are not going to drive it without worrying about the cost just a pity they dont run on sh*te ehcoz there is plenty blethered on here:D

glad your back,tried not reving the engine above 1500 rpms today it dont work in an auto it lasted a full 100 yards before i got bored and floored it:D.
when the oil runs dry then some clever gits will have to find a new type of fuel for us to use because all the government of the world cant survive without the revenue from the motorist,the economy will grind to a halt and we will fighting for fuel the mad max films could be real one day soon:D
