P38 Diesel Manual Box. Runs rough when engine hot. 1 Hour + After a fast run and stoping at junctions, lights ect. a quick blip of the thotle cures fault. I have seen a post that members of the forum have experianced a problem with a vacume in the fuel tank causing this problem. Did venting the tank solve the Problem? Or have members any other surgestions

if it is vacuuming in the tank try running it with the fuel cap off , that way theres no vacuum can build up , obviously not with a full tank of fuel though :) .
i read on another forum about this fault and it seems it can also be the electric fuel pump inside the tank ??
rick.

You can do it, if your an average DIY man, its not too bad to do, but mucky your on the floor etc, make sure the tank is as empty as you can get it otherwise it weighs a lot, 2 people is better, but you can do it with the use of a jack holding the tank up, the pump is about £90 odd from Paddocks, if you take it to some place to do some will charge you for emptying the tank and disposal of the derv (like the inside of the mechanics fuel tank) if your gona do it check out rangie.com im sure the job is in there some place, it a helpful site, i think the job took me about 1 1/2 hours with beer brakes

:) Thanks for the advice. Iam running with the fuel cap loose, all seems ok but all my runs are short at the moment. Will try a long run over the weekend. Thanks again for your support.

Hi just a update. fault still with me! Have ordered a new fuel pump from Craddocks and will fit. Has any one had a similar fault. Garage tells me that thay have had this fault befor but cauld not clear. all P39 Manuel Diesels.

could be the injectors are craped up stick some additive cleaner in the tank (snake oil) and see if it clears the problem, i use additive now and then, and a good brand of semi synthetic oil too (i always used fully synthetic, for the first time i am using semi)

I had this problem after I had a new head fitted to my 2.5 P38. Had a real lumpy tickover even from cold and even completely died a few times on me. I had my garage check it (same people who fitted new head) and they checked the timing and the fuel injection pump timing.

I will ask next time I see him but im pretty sure the problem turned out to be something to do with the fuel injection pump timing being very slightly off or something, to be honest, I cant fully remember, I just know that these two things were checked/adjusted as necessary and this cured my rough idling.

The procedure on how to check the FIP timing is in the RAVE manual as is the info on timing etc.

As I say I will check for you next time I see him if you are still having problems. Sorry I cant be more specific on what it was but hopefully it will give you something to go on.

-Wills :)
