P38 dash into a Classic?

Pondering this one.

It's about dimensions not the electronics etc. None of the internals other than the heating system would be retained. All switchgear etc gone so no wiring to be concerned about.

The question is how much do the width dimensions and others change between the models?
 
Is that to the point of not worth considering?

I thought about butchering a soft dash but the p38 set up looks more modern.
 
What I'm interested in is the actual physical parts, not the components or gubbins.

I'm interested in whether it will physically fit.

i think it might be a bit wider, but sure you could fettle with it to make it fit. i get where you are coming from, and why not . anything is worth a try, saw a p38 body, on a 72 classic chassis, with 91 running gear last year on ebay .

Thanks. It's interesting that it may be wider as that can be solved. If it's shorter then it's more complex.

The real hurdle is the rear face against the bulkhead. If it is curved then differing radius will be a problem. Hopefully they are both straight in that lovely communist era way.

Funnily I can't imagine why you'd junk a classic body for a P38 one. But that's just horses for courses.
 
The P38 is way wider than the classic, of the order of 100mm, and there are no easy cut lines. You'd be better off trying a discovery dash if you want something different.

Using a P38 dash may save much time and work in the fabrication process if starting from scratch.
 
At the risk of being pathetically condescending, for my part the transfer of any P38 component into a Classic does not bode well. As to your suggestion as to what Elsie can do, I not sure it's physically possible.

Here!! me soft dash looks better than P38 :D I have compared a number of diso dashes with mine and buggered if they look the same to me, they are similar lines but very different.

No offense meant. :D

The reason for this tack is that we are looking to move the ICE system into the centre console, rather than down by the driver.

This cannot be done conventionally due to the heater matrix etc.

If we re-fabricate the lower central element of the original dash so that we move it forward, this solves that problem but then creates the issue of losing the mechanical controls for the original heating system.

This in turn is remedied by junking the heating system and replacing with a p38 set up, thus getting the electronic controls and almost certainly a system which adds heat to the cabin and not luke warm air ;)

The p38 central console is also ideal for a very basic re-fabrication of the fascia to accept a double DIN ICE and the heating controls, plus the very few sundry controls.

Thus the question begins to arise as to whether it is easier to take the whole dash from a p38 without any of the components or general gubbins and use as a template or to start completely from scratch.
