P38 4.6 HSE STOPS THEN CRANKS BUT NO GO

So, Parked up the other night, went shopping( argh) for 2 hours, ,,came back to my beloved P38 AUTO, 2001/2 here in Florida, she cranked but would not start...its not hot here by the way, we messed about with all the different combinations of pressing key fob buttons, opening nd close doors and using the actual key, /...would not go, cranked but not fire...after 40 mins, she fired....drove off home , got half way there after 15 minutes and she stopped, right on a junction, at 9 pm..downtown.. had to push the bigger to a fore court...came back next day, she crank and fired immediately...drove her around, then she stopped again..15 minutes..outside the house, wanted over night again, fired her up in the morning, fine, for 15 minutes, then stops..have been told its the crank case sensor. NOT the fuel pump...apart from gales of laughter are there any pointers from anyone, I love this beast...but want her to work again!

The CPS sensor is probably cutting out when hot.
give it a shot of freeze spray when it next cuts out then try starting it, if it fires you know your issue..

I'm pretty certain it is CPS though

Thanks mate CPS sensor is the same as the Crank case sensor?....she's just done it again, fired up first turn, ran well for exactly;y 15 minutes then stopped. , That there sensor is in a damm awkward place to get to, im sure there's a lady doctor routine to get at it properly..

Could also be fuse box related, mine had very similar symptoms

My trusty AUDI A8 4.2 V8 Quattro Sport started or, more accurately, stopped at the most inconvenient and inopportune moments. Friendly AUDI A8 forumite said change the Crankshaft sensor...so I did. Brand new Bosch item, £32.50 or so off eBay with FIVE YEAR Warranty. Friendly local motor mechanic replaced it, charging me only £20.00 and she ran sweet as a nut. Now she's got over 200,000 miles on the clock and is a dream of a car. Like my P38, LPG converted.
So...go buy that sensor and enjoy your motor again!

+1 freeze spray. Cool it off when it plays up should show up
Ideally if you intend to keep the p38 a nanocom would be good investment.

As part of my preventive maintenance program I am planning on replacing my CPS as I do not want to end up stranded somewhere in the mountains of British Columbia. Darned hard to get at though so still on the to do list.

HAHAHA! I'm no snowflake so bring it on :~} I love both by V8 motors and my A8 is pretty chuffin' awesome. I'm driving only my Range Rover currently, as I can't afford to insure both. I've also referred to my Range Rover on the AUDI A8 forum, but without any comments remotely cynical/deferential/undermining to other marques. Do some on here feel threatened somehow? Or perhaps inadequate? TTFN... =~]

If you change the cps only undo the sensor DO NOT remove the bracket it is fixed too as it has to be set for position.

Thanks for the tip on not removing the bracket. That could lead to a lot of headaches if the motor did not run correctly afterwards and you did not know the bracket might be the cause. I always check rhe workshop manual so hopefully they mention this.

Always check RAVE but beware it can be sketchy on times. It probably states remove then reset with special tool needed - you don’t want to do that, leave bracket alone

hi guys. recently bought a replacement Cps sensor I cannot the old one off, have taken the inner wheel arch out and got her up on ramps, but that damm sensor C Clip is just not accessible.any one any ideas? sHould I check the fuel pump too?

Nice to see someone take advice and act on it quickly. Come on over to the Range Rover section. More techie people to help you in it. Some of those who live with us, in the Range Rover castle, don't venture outside the castle gates, but have lots of knowledge to share
