P38 4.0L 2002 fan direction ?

Hi.

I know this is a numpty question and apologise in advance. I need to remove the fan to change the radiator. I know the viscous fan bolt undoes in the direction the fan turns but am doing some other work so can’t start the engine. Looking at the bolt I don’t think it’s been touched since the car was new and I don’t want to make any tighter by going in wrong direction.

If I am standing in front of the engine does the fan turn clockwise or anti-clockwise please??

Might be hard of not been off for a while but i use a pair of mole grips, dead easy. Doesn't need to be done up really tight either

@kermit_rr How does it work with mole grips , not seen that before ? Do you hold the pulley in any way ?

Just use them as adjustable spanner

it should undo with the belt stopping the water pump from turning. If not then a long screwdriver as a lever on one of the bolts to stop the lot turning

It took a long 32mm spanner and a big hammer to undo one of mine

There is a LR special tool for holding the pump pulley. I just use a Keith's method, or a generic holding tool that hooks over the pulley bolt heads.

Similar available on eBay for fraction of the Britpart price !! Most don't mention the P38 but should work.

Thanks @pwood999. I was thinking of getting one but they all seemed to have a longish lead time ( I really need to get her back on the road) so will have a bash (literally) at it tonight. Have seen a few videos using a long screwdriver to hold the water pulley so will give that a go. If none of that works I will order a special tool

36mm spanner there is a specialist one made by Laser IIRC.

Put it on the nut and give 'er a whack to the left.

I've got the specialist tools with the locking bit, never needed to use it personally.

I've got a piece of steel 15" x 2" x 3/8" I use to give it a good wacking then the spanner works a treat

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Good news got the thing lose just needed a bigger hammer

One last question when putting the fan back on does anyone worry about torque or is it just a case of doing up nice and tight ??

Every time mine goes back on its just nipped up a bit more than finger tight, nothing too exciting

Not a good idea to whack what is connected to your water pump...rubber strap wrench will work fine to hold the pulley for removal, and agree no need to go crazy tight when remounting

It will tighten itself with the engine running so as others have said, just nip it up with some copraslip.

Do yerself a favour and try drowning them in milk/oatley or similar
