P38 1999 2.5 diesel automatic transmission grinding?

Hi guys. So we took the car to a mechanic who lifted it and listened to the noise, it was very audible while the car was in the air and seemed to be coming from the torque converter. The mechanic put his hand against the bell housing (and burnt it in the process) and felt it vibrate with the grinding.

The grinding itself doesn't seem to happen when the car is cold. And it happens only in reverse, only at a rpm of around 1000, but if you go very very slow you don't hear it. When it grinds you feel it vibrate in the whole car.

The workshop didn't know why the torque converter would only grind in reverse and not in drive as it spins all the same, they just said the only way to know is to take it all apart, with the gearbox and all.

So, any ideas? Has anybody had or heard of a P38 having the same symptoms before?

I would call Ascroft and see what they say ? Probably too far from you to send the gearbox, but they were quite helpful and knowledgeable about options for my diff noises.

No idea if there's a similar specialist in Finland ?

Yeah, could try giving them a call. Doing any transmission work in Finland would unfortunately cost more than the car is worth. We are currently on a road trip in Romania though, so mechanics here are cheaper.

Check the flex plate for cracks and check that the transmission oil cooler is working.

They sell a thing called Instant Shudder Fixx on Ashcroft's website, it says in the description that it's for when your torque converter is shuddering. Has anyone tried this lube? Think I'm gonna give it a try.

Is that the one in the little red tube. If so it was recommended to me a few years back when my gearbox was playing up. Never got round to trying it as we changed the box any way. Sure it is more for the torque converter than the gearbox
