No I meant a second sprung level for the caravan bit, kind of like the way they do earthquake proof buildings :p

Yep all the bolts and everything else that could come out rattled out :rolleyes: Actually everytime I stopped there was a pile of bolts on the floor, fook knows where they came from cause the landy is still going fine...
 
Hey Griff do you have engine and gearbox oil coolers ? or just engine ?

Been thinking more about the trailer, and the brand new VW Transporter that just became spare at work...

Trailer VS Campervan VS just stick with the roof tent...

Seeing as I have lots of time to travel now, I'll be traveling in winter, so the rooftent/outdoor cooking option really doesn't cut it with Mr Comfort.... Campervan, if it's big enough for a shower, it's too big for a daily run about, and a second lot of insurance and road tax seems a bit of a waste.... Plus there is no serious offroad ability...

So the trailer seems like a great idea. The folding caravans will fall apart for sure, but they gave me some idea's. Thinking of making a 2 piece up down trailer, out of some as yet undecided but strong material...


Will have a VW camper rock and roll bed, that is a comfy sofa when not a bed, table, place to cook, heater, and a shower (so I can do extended stays in the bush in comfort) Will loook something like this...

You gonna be taking this into Russia I believe, make sure you have all the relevant paperwork as mine got refused entry at Narva and I ended up giving it away and all the contents, sounds daft I know but be sure.

In the UK and France where we were there wasn't any need for paperwork but to cross into Russia they demand a logbook for the trailer as well as your car. I tried to explain that there was no such thing for a trailer from 1968 but no-go, they made us wait 7 hours at the border before turning us round, they had even stamped our visa for entry which they then had to cancel, we went back to Narva where we proceeded to give everything away including eventually the trailer itself. Your trailer will have a chassis number stamped into a plate on the back you will need something very official looking with this number and your name, trailers here carry a different reg plate to the car.

G - The same would have applied for O/R caravan had we decided to bring it through. Have heard that some people cobble together an A4 document or certificate - with official looking header bearing chassis and details - that they've put together themselves. Border control don't check with the company itself. But this avenue needs to be checked out in more detail.
 
A good scanner printer , and a bit of photoshopping , of your vehicle V5 inside page with suitable alteration of vin number and other applicable details should look official enough. Not a good idea to add to your vehicle carnet, as if you have to abandon trailer (not uncommon):eek: causes further problems JMHO

PS trailers and off road /track travel dont really go together, they tend to smash themselves up ,fill with dust, jacknife, and act as an anchor . In Aus it became really noticable behind coil sprung 4x4 eg landrovers, and later L/c , N/p . We tried coil sprung trailers, took ages to find anything that would work, and last any time, very hard on shock absorbers. I tried everything from light leafspring to 35ft high clearance tandem axle caravan , only roof tent with canvas cook room underneath was very successful, but it does not rain a great deal in Aus.

Thanks for the input, I for one was never really comfortable with the trailer idea for extreme travel anyway, which is why I have decided that what I actually need is a Unimog, or if my next business works out, a Unicat :D

Unless you are buying a relatively new , or lightly worked unimog(oxymoron) , maybe better to look at Merc 917, or Daf 4x4 as unimogs are amazing vehicles , but are over sophisticated for field repair . and the others are more numerous locally JMHO
ps unicat you can probably afford to have a mech and spares flown out :cool:
