good set of tools, duck tape that always comes in handy
Set of half-shafts and CV's, UJ's/donut, wheel bearings, or does the TD5 Defender need Hubs like a Disco 2?
thought about half shafts but if i fit a new set before i leave i should be ok, half shafts shouldnt be a problem as the safari vehicles are defenders

That was a given, along with WD40
Not sure yet Jon it will probably be tracks as I will be towing a sankey trailer, brake pads are a good one, forgot about them
If its tracks I wouldn't bother with spare shafts or props as like you say you can go on in 2wd if needed. I would have 2 spare wheels though as the roads will be rough and a puncture kit & pump also. Wheel bearings would be good, 1 kit fits all 4 wheels so take a few with you. Only other thing I would get is a spare aux. belt that runs without the alternator so if the bearings fail you can still have the waterpump going, I had this on my 300TDI and was stuck as the alternator was smoking it was that knackered and without the waterpump your stuffed!!
Rear diff

Blummin' good idea. Just a shorter aux belt fixes a tough job.
They sell one for 300tdi on eBay, don't know about td5 though
.I will be replacing both the diffs for new ones before I leave anyway
.
Good, that should minimize any breakages.
Is it mostly the rear diff that destroys, or the front diff ?
I am thinking the front diff isn't as sturdy as the rear?
