Overheating gearbox

Am also searching through the workshop manual for the gearbox heat exchanger cooling side , just trying to cover all bases so to speak

As there’s the flat plate gearbox cooler with the 2 x pipes for the atf oil side and other 2 x pipes from the engines water cooling side

Will come back to u if I find out any further details for u mate , ie, if the overheat temps are in the workshop manual etc so then at least we will know what the trigger points are so then could look via the live data on the scanner

Blimey these workshop manuals have a lot of pages 🤣

Just had it in the back of my mind if there was anything else that could also cause issues and started to look on the cooling side of the ATF heat exchanger and came across these , alas haven’t confirmed as of yet if u have one fitted to ur model

Don’t know if ur able to see any of these items as of yet plse , particularly if things are in the way

IE

The Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) warming valve is a thermostatic ATF mixing valve. The valve is designed to reduce the ATF warm up time and provides a precise temperature control for the ATF temperature. The ATF warming valve mixes the hot engine coolant from the thermostatic control valve and the cold engine coolant from
the radiator low temperature zone. This provides the desired temperature control of the ATF temperature.

Hope it’s useful mate and expect I’m totally barking up the wrong tree but wished to try and read up as much as I could of the workshop manual in case there was something else

Plus looking at some pictures I think that round transmission electrical connector may twist off instead of directly being pulled off , I will of course try and see if that’s the case or not mate

Hope this may also be useful to u mate

As maybe there from an ATF warming valve

Many thks and when u get chance if you would be so kind to have a look if there’s one fitted by ur engine plse , thk u

Ref cloning of tcm, for the 9hp 48

The 9HP TCM is known to have internal faults, in which case the TCM should be replaced however JLR does not sell the TCM as an individual spare part, neither does ZF. In which case the only economical alternative is to source a used TCM, but the VIN of the vehicle is stored in the TCM and in case of VIN mismatch, various faults will be reported on the dashboard and the transmission will be stuck in limp mode.

We are able to clone your existing TCM into the used replacement, or virginise a used TCM that it can be programmed as a new module to the vehicle.

Hi little round thing is grommet for air box, looks like a pipe in picture I must admit, worked through it today, down to sump at last everything came off useable and undamaged, lot of hassle but wanted a good view, you can now get a good view of cooler I fitted, couple of small oil leaks and replacing all air con orings bit of zinc here and there
Parts arrived just now temperature sensor is the little bit sticking out from sensors at 45°
Next job is to clean all around area before removing sump most likely Wednesday
Clean up an bench sort out first and work keeps getting in way
Haven't found anything obvious at moment but early days yet
All the best

Thanks again mate will see what happens next as bits now arrived, but would be a great saving if that's the next step, fingers crossed its sensor, what a gerfuffule to get too, and to put back I'll bet, many thanks once again mate, will let you know readings once I get it out and unplugged
All the best

Hi mate thanks for plug pictures could work out that plug turned anti clockwise, was just being over careful didn't want to break the tab, two thumbs and twist of the connector ring thingy and it popped round, up, and off
Pins all look in mint condition, wiring too so far
Start on change over tomorrow all the best

Blimey mate and times like this when I miss the good old days where engines useto be considerably easier to access along with a lot more room around them

great you’ve now got to them and the info was useful in order that u could get the parts out , Along with that water cooling / heating assembly , blimey they don’t make it easy do they

Wonder if jlr could also tell u if there’s an update or maybe pat at gap , know I got some updates done for my turbo actuator for £25

See that assembly is around £90 and imagine it’s the original one , have been trying to do even more research on it

Hope u continue to make good progress , Huge credit to u and look forward to see how u get on

Yes mate see now why you were interested in water and transmission temp being same on live data, might just change transmission warmer getting to it at later date would be a real pain,
Yes all overcomplicated and squashed in, very difficult to see, once your hand is in the way Lol
Not 100% but think software update is free, just need to book in will call them first hand to see what's what
Also going to replace egr while it's in workshop as should be last issue, then can worry about update if needed many thanks mate for your keeping an eye on me all the best

Indeed ref the live data as spent some time tracing it all back and where the readings were coming from and if one could effect the other so agree that’s why I wondered if it was also relevant

Think ur spot on there mate in changing it now as u say a right sh-it to change later on with everything put back together

Likewise as would have thought it would be free but like everything with jlr they like to charge when ever they can

At the end of the day certainly can’t make the situation worse that’s for sure and will be a great way of eliminating a lot of parts

Thats a good idea about the egr as assume that’s also water cooled and that heater I imagine is tied into it one of at or another

All good fun as they say 🤣

No worries and always happy to assist from afar where I’m able to

Will send over diagrams etc when I can find them for u and if there’s anything else I can assist with plse don’t hesitate to give me a shout

All the best and chat soon mate

Apologies and hope u don’t mind me mentioning it as kept meaning to say know the lifeguard can be expensive to fill and drop so seen this 10 x litre container of an alternative fluid which I thought may be cheaper for u seeing u can get 2 x basic fill and drops and then using the lifeguard for ur final fill

Once again hope ur don’t mind me mentioning it
