My 3.9 v8 disco has cooling problem,i knew i shouldn't have bought it.Water pump was goosed, fitted a new one also changed the thermostat.Engine runs fine,it only seems to overheat when standing still in traffic.I did notice the temp needle sits at halve way but seems to go up a bit then back down to normal.Someone tell me what i wanna hear, that it's not a head problem.

Seems that there maybe an issue with the viscous fan in that the viscous coupling is faulty, so without the flow of air through the radiator when traffic the fan isn't carrying on the cooling of the rad as it should, so the engine starts to overheat when standing still.

Do you have AC fans in front of the radiator? They will or should switch on to prevent overheating distroying your engine, but better never to get to that high temperatures in the first place.
Much better to check the viscous coupling before you have a major engine issue far worse that a failing head gasket/s.

The gauge needle should stay at arround 1mm above the base of the thermometer symbol whatever and where ever, no rising of falling.

Am going to flush the system out,and fit a kenlow fan.

no its not got electric fans,Now you mention it the viscous fan,it doesn't turn free.
If the viscous fan is permantly locked-up so hard to turn round then that won't be the issue for 'not cooling' the rad its when they don't lock and spin is a problem. So start looking else where, iffy blocked radiator for instance.
Again don't let the engine get so hot that it boils over.
