Overheating can't get my head round it

I've got a s11 with 300tdi somebody thrown the engine in
It's got a tdi rad in it
The top hose is cold bottom hose hot
I've teed off the bottom to an expansion tank that's also hot
It's warm in the car too
I'll try to draw it to best describe
But any thoughts

That makes sence might take the thermostat out and see what happens

You will have to cut it out as you need the edge with rubber to make the seal.

is your reservoir mounted high enough? could it be the mother of all airlocks? My 90 displayed similar symptoms last summer. It was just air (methinks)
