Not wanting to cause unnecessary worry but when I had occasional symptoms of overheat (needle would suddenly fly straight to red), especially under load (uphill on motorway) it was eventually diagnosed as cracked block; the crack would periodically open up when stressed.

When I overheated I was just driving past East Grinstead at about 50, so hardly arduous!

I've been for a reasonable run today and it's been perfectly fine. Hasn't seemed to used any coolant, and the needle was bang on 12 o'clock at all times...

If it is a cracked block so be it, I'll set up the eBay search now!

Perhaps I didn't bleed it properly when I changed the rad Mozz, it had been fine for ages before though.

Anyway, I'm going to keep my eye on it, ad we'll see what we see. Thanks for all the advice people. I'll report back if I find anything new.

there u go gorsky yuor away camping so should have loads of big logs to lift car up then !!!! where are you ????????? im at caravan at moment in sunny lincolnshire ,, till next tuesday , cheers mozz

St Ives farm in East Sussex Mozz. Very nice too. Ready for a hot bath and a proper bed though!

my dad had the same issue coming back from Yorkshire in the boiling hot sunlight, sitting traffic, it over heated, but made it back home. when i looked at it, it had a fat air lock in the valley, inlet manifold, and down by the thermostat, so the thermostat wasn't opening properly, and the top end was red hot too! but i filled the top hose to the brim and filed the rad right up, and haven't had any issues at all. hopefully no cracked block!!

Well I'm home.

Drove back fully loaded, including crawling along the M25 for an hour, got home, checked coolant level and it was fine.

I could see coolant in the expansion tank, about the same level as when cold I'd say.

Hasn't missed a beat since the overheat so god knows where that leaves me.

Perhaps I didn't screw down the cap properly when I checked the level before setting off, and it's been slowly boiling off until the level got too low?

I'll just have to keep my eye on it I suppose.

I thought I spotted some wet on a hose on mine today. On the diesel it was left hand side of the engine where the heater hoses go through the bulkhead. After a 30 minute run there was wet where the heater hose passed under (and touches) the aircon hose. However, 5 minutes of staring at it and it all evaporated and didn't seem to come back. Coolant level still OK. I think a sticking thermostat must have caused the mystery loss originally so will replace it (an the water-pump) and hope!
