Nickjaxe, you are right the modern composite gaskets do not require a re torque. It is me still doing them the same way I did 50 years ago ! but I have never had a failure. I have seen the "Crows Foot" spanners, just never trusted them to give correct torque. Something to do with doing things the old way I suppose.

up date to post. Heard back from garage they had the head pressure tested and the engineering firm had to reseal a combustion chamber in the head. What does this mean?
Would this not have all been covered when valve guides were originally replaced?

Not sure what they mean about resealing a combustion chamber. There are core plugs that get replaced on the waterway system and "Hotspots" in the combustion part of the head, these get replaced at times and can come loose in the head and can then be near impossible to do much with if the head recess is worn. I have had one loosen and punch a hole through the head gasket, into the block and piston.
Think they owe you a better explanation of what they have done.

as above ask for more info ,its possible to repair a crack in the head usually between the valves but a crack leading top a combustion chamber is not uncommon, but hot spots arent sealed in the head they just sit loosely in the head and form the combustion chamber

Youcan get a torque wrench now with removable head for different size crows feet. Takes the extension into account with the torque reading.
Also handy if you have access to a calibration gauge like I do to check what they're reading is right

They say loose hot spot and skimmed the head and reassembling today. Should be ready for Saturday, so I will be getting a bill I can assume.

hotspots become a loose fit after theyve been used, the idea they are seperate from the head and so stay hot, ensure they protrude from head 1 or 2 thou, its this that holds them in not fit in the hole

Sorry to resurrect an old post but I finally had some success as problem persisted after the garage gave it back to me, same over heating,cold bottom hose and pressurising! Cured it by reverse flushing the system with the water pump and thermostat out. I believe it was a piece of old gasket from when they changed the head on the original work. Posting this in case any one has similar. Get a power wash through the system as well as all the above.now running sweet as a nut.
