Output shaft renewal

ok, at some point im going to have to change my gearbox as it jumps out of reverse all the time..i can live with it for a while.

Ive found a box that seems ok apart from the output shaft is worn. I have NO knowledge of replacing this. Is it easy and cheap to do?

gearboxes are one of those things that if you dont knowhow to do the inners DONT open it up!!! you can pick up re-con g/box for about 350 or second hand for 100-200. good luck

I'l second that, of all the mechanical work I have done trillions of engines, gearboxes have always been a bastid with their own little tricks to trip you up, and you will probably have to get axcess to a press to get the gears off.

Most folk send them out for repair these days to somebody set up with the right gear.

is that cos there's a big black Dr Who style votex thingy inside ?

do the right thing Storm, dive inside and learn on the job - it's really not quantum physics, but while you're in there best replace all the seals and bearings

I've had plenty of depender boxes for less than £50 off eBay over the years so keep your eyes peeled

No vortex, just seem to need about three pairs midget sized hands to get the bugger back together

I live and learn...i did not know dr who was black! I shall get it (if it stays cheap) and give it a go...i may ver on the edge of caution and leave my box in place til ive examined the tardis..lol

I find they work well in a nice clean/equiped workshop but not to well on a bench, well bit of wood on two crates in back garden. like most things easy if you got right kit.
