Just been quoted £90 to weld in a plate at the top of a rear wheel arch on my disco. Was a bit more than I'd anticipated :(.

The holes not huge. a few inches square, plus a bit after getting the grinder on it I suppose.

Anyway think it'd be cheaper to buy a welder (and learn to weld), as my boot floor will need doing at sometime.

Can anyone give me any pointers as to what sort amp's I'll need, I think I want a no gas set up so I don't need to worry about filling up and storing gas bottles.

What do you reckon I should look to pay for one - second hand?

Cheers

I thought that too,
but there's not many places local to me I'll have a scout round see if there's anywhere else.
Still think that learning to weld would come in handy, reckon it'll save me a fair bit when the boot floor eventually gets done.
Been scouting e-bay and reckon I can get one for about £60.

if you do get one orf ebay get the seller to show you it working cos if your getting crappy results when you use it you'll be wondering if its your technique or if the welder's iffy

redhand has got a good link to a welding site in his sig thats worth looking through

oh and dont be using none of that beer gas get yourself a bottle of argosheild or the air products alternative (thats got a 5 in its name but cant remember the rest)

I've got a copy of the haynes welding manual I downloaded from a link on here.

Have to keep looking around I reckon - but probably wait till next spring and get one then. Rather get decent tools so shall steer clear of non gas then.

As long as the hole on top of my wheel arch dosen't mean it fails it's MOT in January it all seams hun dory (apart from the boot floor). If I don't go in any deep mud or water though I should be fine. Not got a snorkel fitted yet so wading not something I'd expect to be doing.

Thinking about snorkels, can I only get safari snorkels to fit a 94 disco or are there other styles avaliable? Best price I've found is about £165 from paddocks.

if you are going to be doing your boot floor in the near future you will be best to buy the panel now before all stocks run out as the only company that made them was shut down by its american owners last weekend (along with all panels/xmembers/outriggers/repair panels/door frames etc)
