I bought a new BSA motorcycle in 1972 and it was around £500, at teh same time I recall a Minivan (no purchase tax as its was classed as a commercial) was £550 but I think the Mini car was closer to £8-900 as puchase tax was a lot. A friends dad bought a Lotus Elan as a kit to avoid the tax. Intersting to compare the vehicle prices to the house prices, vehicles were very expensive unless you bought an absolute banger. I was chatting to a guy who's boss offered him his Merc 300SL in the late 60's at a "knock down" price of £2000 (they are £1.5M now) and he said is was the same price as a house, no way could he ever have found the money.
