I have had a 110 V8 for about 8 years and I loved it, it was pretty well mint and I looked after it. I did around 90k miles in it and only needed to change the rad and HG apart from silly things like rear wiper box and bushes etc, oh and I put a st steel exhaust on it which really sounded nice. When I got rid it had done 220k miles and was still a good un, still regret selling it.
BUT, as a standard 3.5 on SU's it was no speed machine, I have driven a tuned Td5 and it was no way as fast/torquey, and of course I could'nt hardly pass a filling station without pulling in.
I don't mix well with all this electrickery and ecu's etc but I would quite happily swap it out for a decent Td5, for both economy and performance. I would also rather get my own vehicle repaired (whatever it was) and end up with a known good un, than buy one that may end up being worse in a years time.

Sense, plain speaking and experience. Thank you.

I sort of know the V8 thing was and is folly but it's just the idea of having that great big lump up front and I'm not thinking sensibly about the long term issues that may appear. Not just regarding the V8 and it's thirst but the chassis issues too.
I had not considered the fact that because it's been welded that there are many other parts that may need attention now or in the near future.

I'm going to step away from the advert and concentrate on making sure I get the right advice about the possibilities for the repair or replacement of my bulkhead on the TD5.
If I could find somewhere close enough that I could REALLY trust to do the welding and paintwork properly then that would be fine.

What I don't want is to be doing it all again in a year or two.

Well that's that. I've booked it in for the repair to be carried out, saving me a good few thousand. I think I'll put some of what I've saved towards some sort of Defender based trinket.

Very interesting and entertaining on-line 'think out loud' - thanks All! And probably would get my vote as the final decision too fwiw...... Cheers, A

BTW Parptoot - could you post where you get the welding done (assuming it meets your demanding standards!) as I know I'm going to need some serious A and B pillar and footwell work this year and South Northants is not a million miles away.... Cheers, A

**UPDATE**
It's been in with E H Douglas in Wardington for a few weeks now and this morning I went the the body shop they use (lucky he's a chum of mine) to see the paintwork and finish of the welds. Well I know the paintwork would be good, he knows me and my requirements.

All good and progressing well. I told them not to rush, so they're not, which I prefer.

I was able to save a few thousand taking this repair rather than replace the bulkhead route so, diving fully into the 'Bank of Man' thinking, I used the rest of what I would have spent, but didn't actually have, on the very Defender trinkets I mentioned previously.

So the list of repairs upgrades are as follows.
Bulkhead repair and over the top wax oil.
Transfer box (from some other model, my memory is terrible, what was it?)
Remap
Stainless door bolts and whatnots all round
Oil leak investigation, that I suspect is causing my clutch judder. While the box is off they'll change the clutch and the flywheel.

So there you have it.
I should be getting back in a week I think. I've been missing it and I'm very much looking forward to getting it back.

The great thing about E H Douglas is that you can get a good pint directly opposite...............:D:D

Cheers

Not during the hours I get there :(

I get a great sense of calm and reassurance with E H Douglas, like nothing would shake them. Trust is the key I think.
I do have a terrible memory though and I can't for the life of me remember the cost of each trinket...damn.

All done and back with me for a good few weeks now.
The difference is quite staggering. I know the proper offroaders will sneer and poke fun but I have no solid intention of going proper offroading, where it belongs

It is now able to get to relatively quickly and maintain 70+ mph without any fuss, shaking or over stressing. Motown driving is much quieter and more relaxed.
The oil contamination on the clutch was actually a completely knackered flywheel so that was all replaced too.
The end bill was hefty but not a total surprise and I'm very happy with it.

The other really noticeable thing is the removal of all the cruddy door bolts and the lovely new stainless ones. I should have done that to start with.

I still have wobbles about a V8 though, sorry
