Wile out on the moor yesterday my engine cut out and I had to roll back down a hill into a lay by, the problem was when I tried to get out of it. As it was muddy and steep I selected 4 wheel drive low range, but the car simply shuddered up and down in till I gave up, and so reversed out onto flat ground only then could the car move forward. It felt as if it was a clutch problem, as if too higher gear.
Then today in a muddy field the same happened again, but I could see that the front wheels would not move even though the back ones were spinning. When they did move it was at an inch at a time. After three attempts to cross the mud the front wheels engaged and I was off, however they did not work again. Could it be a transfer box problem, free wheel hubs not working or the clutch giving up, please help.
