Hello everyone - I'm new to this site and, as you'll find out, landrovers in general. I bought by first landy two days ago and 5 minutes into the journey home I was sitting on the side of the A414 whilst my 'new' 1997 110 CSW 300TDI was being eaten by billowing clouds of white smoke from a blown turbo. After some searching for a replacement turbo, not on eBay this time...this is being fixed next week with a new unit. I'm sure something else will blow up / drop off shortly so I could become a frequent poster on this site. :violin:

Actually, I just realised that I'm not totally new to landrovers as I bought a brand spanking new freelander (do they count?) in 1999, that also broke.

My middle name is lucky.

I need to get a user manual so I can check it first before coming crying to everyone on here; are Haynes still the best? I've replaced the heads on a couple of cars before to give an idea of my current level of (in)competence. Thanking you.

do a search for "rave land rover manual" on the tinterweb its downloadable and covers just about all you should ever need, failing that ask some questions on here and dont be a big girl when you get a bit of abuse, we like to take the p1ss a bit but the info is second to none after the initial roasting :D

Thanks Lynn, it feels like home already.

Fanatic - Private sale. It was cheap. It was eBay. Just shy of 100k miles, previously owned by one of the local authorities here in Essex.

All - anyone care to guess at the next thing I'll have to replace? My money's on the gearbox. Literally.

welcome to the site

great first post :)

in hindsight it would have been good for you to research here before buying the motor, the you could have given it a good look over

we live and learn

Thanks for the welcomes and things everyone. I have some Rave manual download action going on in the background.

When I broke down (see first post) another defender driver went past, turned around, and came to see if I was OK. And today one of the blokes I work near who I don't know beyond saying "hello" to heard my story and out of the blue offered me a spare turbo he had. I've got to say that I've accidentally joined a very friendly and helpful club.

I found this with motorbikes too, even the motorcycle police are friendly. Coincidentally you may be amused to hear that (as I couldn't take my new landy out) last night I went out on my bike and somewhere on my outward journey part of the rear seat fell off. I wont mention bikes again here.

If anyone has anything currently in full working order that for some reason they want to break just let me know and I'll come round and touch it - that should finish it off.

Anyway. I'll shortly be starting new threads as I get my head under the bonnet (which needs to be pushed to the left to open). My first thread may be entitled "why oh why does this poxy alarm key fob not work even with new batteries and pressing it multiple times in various ways according to assorted previous threads that have worked for everyone else". But seriously I'm not going to investigate that until the turbo is fitted and I can take it out for a proper run.

Thanks everyone, you've made me feel very welcome and I doff my hat to you all.

I would just like to apologise to everyone for buying the freelander. I've learned my lesson and am very sorry and I won't do it again.

flog yourself with a big stick !!!
welcome to the crazy world of landys
hope you get sorted and yes welcome to the grease monkey club ( no manicures here)
yes you will need to get down and dirty unless you have deep pockets but your landy will soon sort that and you will be as skint as the rest of us :frusty:must be mad

Chums - on a slightly serious note my new shiney turbo has arrived. Reading the manual hasn't thrown up anything too daunting about fitting it myself but a local mechanic I spoke to who quoted me £100 to fit it said that included in that price is checking for and cleaning up all the places that the blown turbo had...er...blown oil. Is there anything else you think I should be aware of before attempting replacing the turbo myself? Apart from my horrendous knack of killing everything I touch lately. (Should I post this somewhere else now?). A thousand thanks.
