After some advice. I've owned two defenders and temporarily a couple of tdi discos but in the new year I'm looking at selling my ford ranger which has done me well and replacing it with a td5 disco.

Not knowing much about the engines I thought I'd ask here what to look out for? What's a realistic budget to get a good un? I do plenty of towing trailers so what kind of reliable power is achievable on a remap?

I put together a small list a while ago..
Items to check on the D2 when looking at one. Hope it helps

Regarding the remap, it all depends on where you want to stop and how much you want to spend, A stge 1 will coat approx £250 and give you an extra 40bhp..

Cheers

Rear chassis is one of the main things I think. Prices seem to be all over the place for the cars, there doesn't seem to be any sort of price trend. It's very strange

Thanks for the comments so far. My ranger diff is on the way out I think, and the old girls just getting generally worn out. Can't wait to have a bit more comfort, power and most of all another landy... :D

I think you can expect some faults on a vehicle which will be at best over 10 years old. The one thing that would definitely make me walk away would be extensive rust (not just surface) in the chassis. My experience is that once serious corrosion starts you can only ever slow it down....

Rust, rust oh yeah and... rust ;).
Make sure you check for leaks and old bodges. And don't buy the first one you see (unless it's totally mint!)

Poor starting
Oil level rising
Oil in engine loom

Keep a look out for fluid leaks.
Drip locations are steering box (PITA to fix) and ACE block
