And I don't mean the Mrs! Though come to think about it:scratching_chin:. Any way just considering changing The 2.5 Nad engine in my 1986 110 pick up to the 19j turbo. Just wondered about any thoughts on this or useful tips. Where could I source one from? Ebay is only showing one and it is in far south and being in stoke on trent I thought it a bit tooo far to travel.

Cheers Clive.

Why go to the bother of putting a smokey old underpowered 19j in when for the same or little more hassle you could put a far superior 200 or 300 tdi? You'd have to be mad in my humble opinion.

that would offer very little gain.
if you are gonna take out and replace a engine then its gotta be worth while

i had the td enjin and for months kept throwin money at it to repair it,,in the end i opted for a genuine 200 tdi defender enjin and have never looked back

my advice 200 tdi or stick with what ya got
dont forget the 19j td enjin is essentialy a na with a turbo on it

Aye, there's no point in sticking a 19j in there. The story goes that the 19j is pretty much the old 12j NAD with a turbo whacked on the side. Although it was modified to cope with the extra stress from turbocharging, it wasn't enough and as a result many have failed by now after not particularly high milages. Ones that still survive are typically very smoky, underpowered and altogether a bit knackered.
Everyone here will tell you to get your hands on a 200tdi engine (Discovery or Defender ones will go in fairly easily).

Absolutely 100% behind Hughesy there. The 2.5TD or 19J is commonly regarded as THE worst engine Land Rover produced. It's practically a 2.5 N/A or 12J if you like, with a slightly different injection pump and a Turbo bolted onto the side. Later 19J's had slightly thicker blocks with a bigger water jacket to help cool the engine more efficiently and generally "cope" with the extra strain that the turbo put on the engine. A lot of people stand by them and will defend their capability none the less, but when it comes to it, you're replacing a rock solid engine that will run and run and run with an engine thats no more powerful and in fact more troublesome. Just to put you off a little more, you'll find varying reports on these forums of 19J's not running as well as, pulling as well as and going as quick as 12J's, also with a lower fuel economy.

You'll be able to source a good 200tdi from a Disco, or even a whole Disco for a few hundred quid which you can then break down and make money on in selling the parts. The 300tdi requires a bit more work to fit, or so I'm told. You would (if you took the tdi route) be getting a solid engine with bags of torque, plenty of power and relatively good fuel economy. They also shift quite well too!

Thanks for the feed back guys. I was mulling over ideas and the like for the revamp and was wondering if any of you on here have used SVO (straight veg oil) in a 200tdi or similar. Has it given any one any problems? Or would you stick with the nad engine for using such fuels?

My only experience was my old T****a MPV turbodiesel which I ran on veg oil for a while. However, it killed the fuel pump fairly quickly and the fuel filter needed replacing fairly often. Other than that it was great though.

The 200tdi will run happily on veg oil. The 19J and the n/a diesel are said to have pumps which don't like it but I ran my 19j for thousands of miles on veg oil with no problems.
