I get 35 mpg.
Heated mirrors, heated windscreen.dual control on aircon. Twin sunroofs ,7 seats.
Off-road use.
Cheap insurance and cheap parts.
It's still better than your Freelander by aFar way and it's 25 years old.
Lol face it your just driving a car.
Land rovers stopped being built in 1998. 😁😂
So equipment is OK, although I know a D1 didn't have sat nav or a 14 speaker audio system, and definitely no 5☆ crash rating, 7 air bags or DSC.
Having had a D1, D2 and D3, (the D3 was by far the best to drive), I'd still have my Freelander 2 over them. It's big enough to do the job (it's actually bigger that a D1 except in height), without all the hassle of a rusty chassis.

Sound system is awesome, harmen karden thingy with bass thing and amp in the back door, very good.
Built in phone system . Dont need sat nav because I know where I'm going and don't like being tracked 24/7
Dont need a crash rating as it will destroy anything in its way with the bull bars and steel bumpers etc.
It's better than a freelander ,all mechanical pretty much and will be going on far longer than your junk.

Electric cars will come and go before it stops going and you will be on a hydrogen powered plastic computer controller

Sat Nav is handy when driving in a strange place, and can't be tracked. Your phone can be though. ;)

A D1 will not destroy anything modern. They're made of thin tin on top of a moderately soft chassis. I've seen what happens to one after hitting a new Fiesta head on, the D1 body was torn right off the chassis. Trust me they're definitely not as strong as you think. You get hit by someone driving a 3☆ crash rated vehicle or higher, and you'll be in serious trouble.

Not many D1s at 300k miles on the original engine or gearbox, but there are plenty of FL2s with 300k on the original engine and box. The Freelander isn't junk at all. Its engine makes more power, better economy, better refinement, less emissions all while going much further before it needs a rebuild. You really do need to do a modicum of research before spouting rubbish.

I'm waiting for a Fisker Ocean to become affordable, then I'll say goodbye to my Freelander.

Your phone can be tracked whether you use the sat nav app or not. At least the maps are up to date.
I had to look up fisker!!! No room for an ev in my life yet

Don't have a phone.
I'm on 200k miles original boxes and engine
So I'm still in a better vehicle than a freeloader and it's a land rover

Genuine mistake 😏
DVLA ran out of boots on a housing estate near me last month they ended up getting more shipped in ! 19 untaxed / insured in total

Posh holes then as they are tinted glass. Both open and close and they have twin sunshades in each sunroof window.😂

Are twin sunroofs a good thing? I keep the blinds across both of mine so the sun doesn't heat the inside too much. I never use them myself, I think they're kinda pointless.
Unfortunately if you want a particularly spec vehicle, a sunroof normally comes along with the other stuff.

Sunroof is great! Not pointless at all
The need for a sunroof is pretty much negated by climate control. ;)

The real question is which vehicle is best a Freelander 2 or D1, and why?

I can't think of many reasons a D1 would be better than a FL2, if they were both as they left the factory.
I suspect there are very few places a D1 would go that a FL2 couldn’t, I'm not taking about modified, but factory fresh.
The FL2 occupants would be safer, should an incident occur on the journey. But it's been so many years since I had a D1, most of its annoyances have disappeared with the sands of time. I do remember it handled like a bag of crap, and had so little power it wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.

A well maintained discovery 1 will far out last a freeloader.
So on that point alone it's much better.
There are many many other reasons not to buy a freeloader and get a discovery 1 but I just can't be bothered to list all of them.

Freelander ...NO!😂😂

True, but the sunroof is nice even if it's not needed, likes having the window open, but not.
I think the biggest difference apart from age/design, is the live axles and low range

With the morons on the roads these days, you're welcome to your D1.
I'll put my family in the Freelander, where they'll be as safe as I can make them.
