OK Lets Start at the very beginning.
Bought my 2002 L322 TD6 July last year and within 2 weeks it had its first problem
the air suspension pump so a recon unit was purchased and fit.
then i replaced the brakes all round.
then I replaced both lower suspension arms.
then I replaced 4 Injectors (not cheap)
then I replaced the water pump due to a leak
then I replaced the starter motor.
then I replaced the Turbo
Sharp intake of breath, oh forgot to mention the gearbox was replaced 3 months before i bought it £3500 one of the main reasons i bought the car.

Now the final straw.
last week pulling our caravan up the M6 we pulled into the services for a break and just as i was stopping a message popped up "Check trailer plug" then "ping" another message STOP low oil Pressure and the little red oil can light was flashing so I stopped the engine sharpish and lifted bonnet and check oil bearing in mind the turbo and ALL filters were changed and the 4th oil change since i bought the car some 7000 miles ago, and the oil level was fine so we went for a brew and returned some 30 mins later started the engine and waited for the message to return or the oil light to come on again but it didn't even when i reved her up s assumed another ecu false message, my personal favorite is HDC inactive.
so we started our journey again some 10 miles later a strange knocking started and within 20 seconds the engine stopped and we coasted into the hard shoulder.
lifted bonnet to be greeted with blue smoke and a hot engine.

Now im not sure what has gone wrong but im guessing oil pump failure.
the engine has done 122000 "Just run in" i have heard many say which cheeses me right off.

This Range Rover has become not only the best car I have owned but also the worst by far.
I have a 31 year old Mk1 Golf GTi which has done 230000 miles and has never let me down like this thing they have an owners club forum too which I was the chairman of with over 800 paid members.
I have to say that this forum LandyZone is very friendly club and been very useful with advise and tech know how but it does differ somewhat from the VW club as there it also has a very active social side as tech advise isn't asked for as much due to reliability.

I think my short Love affair with my Rangy is over its like taking a fit page 3 model out, looks great and you love to be with them and show them off but bloody hell does it come at a price which is sad.

Im guessing having paid £7999 for the car to start with and up to now spent over £2000 on it so far (not mentioned tyres and other bits) and now faced with a poss bill of another £2500 im sure you can understand if i would suggest to anyone thinking of buying a Range Rover to think very hard and to check their disposable income.....

Sadly that's range rovers

On a side note I have a vw t4 vr6 and a bora sport : -)

You must have a wrong one

There's a lot out there that are trouble free to their owners

Sorry to hear you've had a lot of trouble

Hope you get it sorted :)

Give Ideal Engines in Daghenam a call - they will fit you a low-mileage unit for a couple of grand - and they give a 12 month warranty

they have helped out several of my friends and colleagues and always provide a good service at reasonable cost.

It seems to be very hit or miss which is the marques biggest problem, i guess
down to poor quality control when they're built perhaps

My last Landcruiser had done over 180,000 miles with only minor
problems none engine or gearbox related.
I'm now on my third Landcruiser and no problems other than warped rear discs
due to previous owner buying cheap junk

Good luck with fixing it.

Really sorry to hear your tale - there are good ones out there. You bought at a good price despite having to pay a bit more subsequently.

I have been extremely luckily as my 2002 TD6 (faultless over 4years and over 100,000 miles when sold) and my current 2004 4.4V8 (bought with 125,000 miles, now 160,000 miles, LPG) have been a dream.

Only advice I can give is to try and buy one whose history or owner is known. FLRSH is meaningless IMHO but a well looked after one by owner and servicer will always prove a better bet.

Well, Land Rover didn't make the failing TD6 engine - blame BMW. My friend's one owner from new Land Cruiser is on its third cylinder head!

I am on 195,000 miles on my Range Rover, it spent 5 years as a farm slag and she still runs nicely with no major grief.

There can only be one A5OPY....can there?

Alright Ginger!

well hello ladies....

i feel your pain brother.

i paid £6k for my 2004 4.4 just over a year ago, i could probably quite easily find £4k i've spent on it in that time and its now probably worth £6K or less??

i have said many times, the pleasure i get from owning mine is not from driving it but from working out whats wrong with it and putting it right..

i do tend to drive it more now than fix it, i have covered about 6000 miles in it in that time, which i love doing and for a 10 year old car, i think it looks pretty good..

its better the devil you know, if you love the principal of owning it, fix it and carry on driving it, eventually you will run out of things to replace, or money :D

Or more likely go full circle and replace things you've previously replaced. Then become a font of knowledge on the forum !
