Mine still ran with a dead needle lift sensor, I cannot remember if if ran badly. As you say, replacements are expensive. Have you checked to see if the connector is full of water?
Old fashioned Aspirin works best for my back when it plays up.
Started up instantly just now but idle not as smooth. I can only just see the connector but can't get a hand to it. Looks like inlet manifold off to access which I'm not sure I can manage just now. Slathered in deep heat at the mo which helps

I have no undertray on mine. Shouldn't matter as I have had water over the block when wading and no issues. Mind you, Tomcat fried his with a hosepipe. Guess you could always unplug it and try a hairdryer.
Yeah, I was just clutching at straws I think, lamp has never come on in the 2 or is it 3 years I've had it, but did after that quite impressive down pour last Saturday.

Managed(well, the wife did) to unplug the connector to number 4 injector after I removed the inlet ducting only, manifold left in place.
DMM is reading open circuit when I probe the two terminals.
Clarification that it's deffo dead?
No damage to the cable at all.

If it's open circuit it's dead. In basic terms, the sensor is a coil and a magnet that moves with the injector needle producing a pulse.

Searching, on here, has shown 2 bosch part numbers, early(pre egr) and late with egr. White plug for early, dark brown/black for later.
Mines 2001 with egr and has the black plug. Bosch part number for the later one is 0 432 217 279.
Prices vary from £240 odd iirc and £400 odd, most are around the £300 mark. I've found the part number in a couple of eBay listings but I have to enter make and model etc in a drop down menu to confirm its the correct part but it then says that "this doesn't fit your vechicle"
Pic is correct, part number is correct but computer says no!
Will only fit vauxhall/bmw, I know they are the same m51 engine but it's still making me nervous to purchase it even though the saving is c£40.

I purchased mine from Island 4 x 4. I will not buy things like that from Ebay because you really do not know what you are getting.

As an example, neither fit according to the drop down vehicle search but both have the correct part numbers

Try Rimmers or Europart. Before splashing out, make sure the wires have not broken.
None there either unfortunately.
Now I've confirmed she'll run with it unplugged I'll cut the wires an inch or so down stream from the injector and retest what's left.

You should have the later injector (if all is original). There’s a different connector as you’ve seen, but for few extra quid it’s worth getting the right one rather than chopping a brand new unit up.

If you can get your hands on a cheap second hand early unit then chop away and take the chance.

I’ve had FIP and inj4 issues - never had that particular warning sign. Maybe later models are different but wouldn’t have thought so. CPS doesn’t nornally throw a dash symbol or show any sign other than running issues/diagnostics error.
I never had undertrays or issues with wading/water

I've ordered a new one today. After cutting the cable a couple of inches downstream from the injector and testing for continuity, still duff, but worth a try just incase a wire had broken. £256. Brown plug as original.

Fitted new injector this afternoon, tie wrap used to hold the hp line out the way, inlet manifold has been placed in position, nothing trapped since the photo below. I'll finish buttoning it all up tomorrow cos me backs still sore.
