I did 100 miles in my series 3 diesel the other day.

I've just noticed that the rear x-member and rear of the body are covered in tiny spots of oil or diesel.

Any ideas what it is? I'm guessing unburnt fuel from the exhaust? Does the pump timing need to be advanced? I've set the timing based on trial and error!

Or I suppose it could be a cylinder not running properly, the sound from the exhaust is sometimes like it's mis-firing, though the engine feels fine. Is that normal for a series diesel exhaust?

More likely to be an oil leak from the engine of gearbox or diffs. Oil drips and before it hits road the turbulence behind the flat rear end sucks it up and sticks it to the back of your price and joy. The leak might only happen when you landy gets hot or oil gets sucked up when going 'fast'!

It leaks oil from everything that has oil in it, though the gearbox is the worst culprit!

I hope get some of them sorted soon, so I'll not worry too much until I've done that.

Cheers :)

Usually looks worse than it is, wind-blown etc.

A wash off with paraffin and a dust with talc, should pin point main areas ...

That would depend on which engine you have fitted ....

Could be the oil filler plug, I had the same on fast long trip and wrapped some gaffer tape around plug to make a tighter seal, but also did leak EP90 from all the usual places too
