I'm now quite worried about my engine rebuild (other thread) after I discovered the hole in the head oil feed banjo bolt was blocked with sticky crap.

I'm now starting to wonder what other stuff is floating around. I'm not sure whether this is something I've dislodged or not but I was quite surprised just how dry the inside of the rocker box was when I took it off to start this job.

Anyway, are there any quick checks I can do to make sure that other internal passages aren't blocked or is it a case of strip down or drive it and hope for the best?

My plan is to recheck the head feed pipe tomorrow then run with the rocker box off and fan disconnected to see what squirts....

Anyone got a diagram of the oil flow in a 2.25 series? i.e. where does the head feed come from (end of cam gallery or straight from pump) etc?

You can get oil way brushes which are basically long thin bottle brushes. If you're really worried take the head off and use those but there is always a possibly you may create a block by pushing debris into a corner.
Sorry, I don't really know these motors but is there a sludge trap in the crank? As this will give a guide to the amount of crap in the oil ways.
You could remove and clean any external unions and banjos. You may have found the only blockage already - banjos are actually quite restrictive.
Just read that back and seen that its no help at all, sorry.
 
No worries, there doesn't seem to be a lot of information on the internals of the block and I really need to get this thing running so don't want to have the engine out. Buggered if I know what to do for the best really. I'm off to France in it in a few weeks and really don't want to be risking it seizing over there I had experience of French deppanage (breakdown recovery) last year and it was worse than useless!
 
the only advice i can throw in is id remove the sump ( can be done with the engine in )

and drop the oil pick up pipe out and make sure thats cleaned out also clean the dregs out of the sump while its off checking fer gunk and metal filings n crapp all just fer a bit of peace of mind :D:D:D:D
 
Thanks James, I was looking at something like Wynns or running diesel oil (extra detergents?) but am concerned that many people seem to think this is likely to cause more crap to get dislodged.

Aye Johnny, it's got new (<20miles) oil in now I was going to give it a run with this. Drain and take the sump off and scrape it out. I'm pretty sure the pump/strainer isn't bloked though as the oil pressure is good, rather I think some crap's got in after the filter either before the rebuild or (quite likely) I've managed to poke/drop something into the engine. I'll drop the sump first maybe a better idea!
 
ATF (Automatic transmission fluid) is a great cheap detergent.

Drain some of your oil out and add some of this run it for a short while and drain everything out and then fit new oil and filter.
 
I've had the top end feed pipe block on me, drove for a while with virtually no top end lube. Still runs a bit tappety but the engine is still going.
 
Right I think I'll give a few pints of ATF a flush through then refill with diesel oil and run for the next couple of weeks on that and flush and put 20/50 in for France....sounds like a plan.

Also I'll have the sump off after the first flush and get hold of a load of filters this afternoon
 
Well I got hold of some ATF and a couple of gallons of el-cheapo 15w40 diesel oil from the local factors. I gave it a litre of ATF in the old oil and ran for 25 minutes at 2000rpm then drained and cleaned the pan out. It seemed a bit smoky when I started it up after refilling but not sure if that wasn't the choke being out.

Anyway there seems to be plenty of oil getting to the tappets now but will give it a proper check when it is light. The engine sounded very quiet when I first started it but quite tappety when I got home....not sure if that's the rubbish oil or what.

I'm going to put some decent 20/50 in before I go off to France as its likely to be nice and warm!
