oil pump screw problem?

Hello everyone, i have a disco 2.5tdi 2002 which is sitting in at a main dealer's here in France in need of a new engine, a new turbo and gallons of labour as a result of a screw having dropped from the oil pump and causing massive damage in an extremely short space of time (less than 1 minute whilst I pulled off the road). I am a girly girl when it comes to cars (sorry to all capable girls out there!) but i managed to contact a landrover "doctor" yesterday, who told me that this is a problem he comes across with my "series 1" between 80,000 and 150,000 kms - mine has 120,000 - and could have been prevented by checking, tightening and "glueing" the screw at the last service. As Landrover do not recognise this as a known problem, this is not a check the main dealers carry out. Has anybody reading this come across this problem, can anyone confirm what I have been told and if so, have I got any case at all against Landrover?

All I can say is that it's a well known problem on the TD5 and No you probably have'nt got a case against Land rover!

Told you I was useless - it is, of course, a TD5. Thanks for the confirmation - it just makes my blood boil to know that it could so easily have been prevented. Next question, has anyone got a spare engine, ideally in France? :D
 
It is a well known problem on TD5 Discos, and there was even a part on that consumer show in England (the name eludes me) and some guy complained and Landrover fixed his engine. The bottom line was that even though your car is out of warranty, it should perform as expected and with this crap bolt coming of the oil pump, it does not. Call Landrover and make a claim. My mate here in Switzerland who works for Landrover has seen this a few times.
 
That was really useful, thank you. I have read all the associated watchdog, etc articles and have just put in a claim to Landrover France. They are talking about making a "contribution", which I am afraid will not satisfy me after having read that the loclite (or whatever) was FORGOTTEN to be put on the bolt. I shall keep the forum updated of progress, if anybody would like to know the outcome.

Yes, thanks, that's one of the sites I looked at. I will wait for Landrover France's response early next week (or so they tell me) and see how to take it further. I may be a girly girl, but I am at the very least tenacious! :D
 
As you may have already noticed nothings cheap in France (Except wine).
You would be best looking for a second hand engine in the U.K out of a TD5 that has been written off but the engines O.K.

Thanks Jason - you are not wrong about the prices around here! I am going for the full monty at the moment to see how far I can push LRFrance - have managed to find an engine in the UK (but it is on hold for the moment).
 
Go tenacious lady. If land rover france are already talking some input, push hard, then push em harder. I am glad you reminded me it was watchdog. I am a slack brummy and am not happy about some fellow brummy missing out the loctite.

Go girl.. You have my support.
 
Where are you in France?

As has been mentioned, ANYTHING to do with cars, not only Land Rover, is very expensive in France.

I recently made a trip back to UK from Auvergne to get a replacement gearbox & transfer box - nearly £1000 cheaper.
 
Just a quick update - Landrover France have now categorically refused to make ANY contribution. Am now on Plan B !!! :mad:
 
Thank you for that link, Jason. Plan B in operation but too early to say if anything is budging.......... will let you know as soon as have news, one way or the other .......... :cool:
 
Several hours later - thank you VERY MUCH for that link, Jason, etc .... we are on Plan C and it is looking 50% more promising .............. watch this space (if you are in France ..) ;)
 
I just mistakenly posted this as a new thread- looks like I have the same problem, in France, just like Fudge, and I'd really like to know if there has been any progress with Land Rover France.
I managed to cut the engine almost immediately, there was no other traffic around. My TD5 is late 2001, 130,000 kms.
Any help greatly appreciated.

To repeat my first post....
Driving down from Paris to home very late last night in the TD5 ( I live near Poitiers in western France) the red light in the shape of an oil can suddenly came on.... Fortunately there was no other traffic around, so I turned off the engine within about 15 seconds, and stopped on the hard shoulder. The car now sits in a garage about sixty miles north of home, to be transported to an LR dealer Monday morning.
I gather from my nearest neighbour and fellow Disco forum member Jason2 this could be the oil pump screw problem - to put it mildly, worst way a new engine.
Any comments or helpful suggestions gratefully received, I have to go into deep discussions with the garage on Monday morning.

We had one unlucky guy who had the bolt fall off, and then on his new engine a tooth broke on the sprocket and the chain fell off. Luckily by this time he had an audible alarm on his oil pressure and switched the engine off before it was damaged. To add insult to injury, LR only sell both sprockets and the chain as a set for an arm and a leg or two. Luckily we got a sprocket from a scrap engine.
 
My brother-in-law went to Land-Rover directly and our local dealer (James Edwards, Chester) wouldn't believe him that they OK'd an engine change but sure enough he had a new engine and 12 months guarentee (speling terible).
He pushed them that it was LR's duty to trace all affected cars and do the recall work regardless of history, owners, use...etc.
