Series 3 Oil Pressure Light Spookyness

After full diagnostic inspection before attempting pump replacement (bout 10 minutes) now the new pump arrived this morning, I have narrowed the issue right down to a slight short behind the speedo on the warning light. A simple wiggle twixed finger and thumb sorted the issue. :(

Anyone need a new pump

They say it is never the oil pump @Bobsticle but i'm really hoping it is the problem in my case. Mine is in the post and i'm out of other options.

I had a look at the quill gear. Everything looks nice and tight and oily. I'm going to take apart the pump and see if the pressure valve is the problem. As you know, i'm getting intermittent pressure. Sometimes full pressure and sometimes no pressure. The pressure gauge was pricy (£100) but really worth it for a clear sight of the issue.

If there are any other new ideas i'd love to hear them.

That's not the shaft which drives the oil pump, it's the quill shaft which drives the injector pump. There's another one between the skew gear you can see in the engine block and the pump in the sump.

I've stripped the pump and can't see anything obviously wrong.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake. I have a shot with that jobby out the way. I guess it is the lower half of this gear that drives the pump. Can anyone spot anything wrong with it? I realise it isn't the best photo.

It is now fixed. It seems to have been an issue with the pump. Either the pump wasn't getting a seal where it was mounted to the engine case or there was grit in the bore of the pressure release valve holding it open.

Thank you for all your help. You guys got me there.
