I changed the engine oil of my Freelander 1 TD4, as I have done previously. A week later, having used it during that week, on a return short journey, I wondered why I was being tooted by a car overtaking me, only to find upon my return home, I had lost a substantial amount of oil. After removing the tray, the underneath of the car mainly on the driver’s side, was covered in oil. It definitely came from the front of the engine. After cleaning the whole area and topping up the oil(about a litre) and running the car I can’t find any indication of where the oil came from. Desperate!!!

Does it look like a lot of oil has been sprayed all around the dip stick area?

Start the engine and see if you can see where the oil is coming from.
It could be coming out the filter screw cap, if the seal isn't in the large groove as Arctic said. Alternatively it could be coming up the dip stick if the crankcase filter is blocked or the crankcase vent valve is dirty.

Yes the only change I made was to fit the new filter to top before replacing and screwing down.
Yes I have done that and there no oil leak now.
