oil leaks!!

recently bought a 91 defender swb 2.5 Tdi, just noticed a few drops of oil coming from the gearbox area.Is this an expensive repair? and would I be better off going to a landrover specialist or a competant mechanic?
answers on a postcard please!

There's a lot of stuff with oil in round there and lots of places for it to come out! See if you can figure out if it's thick EP90 transfer box oil or gearbox oil - might be an LT77 gbox in 91 which I think also used ATF like the later R380s. ATF is thinner than EP90 and red - but I could be completely wrong about the type of oil for an LT77. R380s definately use DII.

The dripping on mine - a 96 110 - was the oilseal for the rear prop... which had also ruined the handbrake shoes, although it still seemed to hold the car perfectly well.

I had this exact same problem with my 90. Local garage fitted a new seal, replaced the shoes and cleaned out the handbrake housing. I had a sticking handbreak in reverse which meant every time I reversed having had the handbreak on the car juddered like a maddy and made a real nasty sound.

All in it cost me about £43 for the seal and another £50 for the handbreak, that included labour/parts and oils to refill the box. Car now running perfect, still noise but its a 90!
oh and the leack stopped. i had a look at the old pads and they were totally crudded up on old oil.
