just setting the tappets now and it seems as though one was way out, with the valve open all the time, i had to back the adjuster way out to get to 10 thou.
will check it again, but what probs would it cause if wrong, ie. always closed, or always open?

so everything back together and filling with water when i see it all gushing out onto the floor from the side of the head!
after a good look around, decide to whip the head off again, gasket on upside down
also found a push rod net seated right!
so all back together and running
sounds ok, but cant tell if its still smokey, was a bit but only to be expected after a head job, then it got too dark to see the smoke!
so tomorrow aft its warm it up, check tappets, give it a drive. fingers crossed!
do i need to check head bolt torque again?

regards
James

woah! what a lot of smoke!! couldnt see anything behind! but then it cleared :D
seems pretty good now, purring like a pleased kitty! pulls well too (got to look at those brakes again).
any tips on bleeding the water? i found the heater control near the stat was completely blocked, not alowing water thru, cleared it but still little heat from the heater,
also any reason the temp gauge should read red when i can touch it?
and the warning light to the left of the fan switch, what is it?

also any reason the temp gauge should read red when i can touch it? does it always read red? (ignition on, engine off) trapped wire?
and the warning light to the left of the fan switch, what is it?heater fan switch? and blue? its the low diesel warning light.[/quote]

Try backflushing the heater matrix with a hosepipe - if the valve was clogged the matrix may well be. It'll check whether or not the matrix is clear.
The temp gauge could be a failed regulator (the fuel gauge won't work properly either) or sender. Disconnect the sender, if it still reads hot there's a short in the wiring.

thanks chaps, gauge goes down when sender is disconnected, a bit reluctant to flush as i dont want to show up more leaks! but first will try to test sender, multimeter and hot water?
fuel light flashed even tho reading just below half full. it was a bumpy road tho!

Just pop the hoses off of the matrix and put a hosepipe on the exit pipe, applying gentle water pressure - if lots of gunge comes out you've probably fixed it, if the water flows clear the fault is elsewhere, if nothing comes out it's blocked - you now have the choice of leaving it alone or increasing the pressure. If it leaks it's not too difficult a job to replace.
