I was under the impression there is a separate rear seal.
You was under the right impression, it's there below the ''half-moon" section, ERR5369

Cleaning the existing O ring and cap before applying a light bead of silicone sealant to the outside face of the O ring cures this leak without any need for parts to be shipped to Aus. and is a more permanent fix that won't come loose again. Contrary to others beliefs that sealant can get in the engine if you just apply the sealant to the outside edge the existing O ring prevents any sealant entering the engine side.

Relying on silicone, and not the primary seal of the O ring, nope. I'd not use silicone on an engine, as once set, some bits could break away, enter the oil ways, and block them.

The primary seal goes in first sealing the engine preventing any sealant entering the engine in any way. Totally impossible for any oil ways to get blocked.

And make sure you do a nice clean up job, getting rid of all that cruddy oil... Smuggness will follow as you look at your nice clean engine...

The driveway is the embarrassing bit - left a "slick" at my dad's house - newish driveway!:oops: Definitely is this front camshaft seal (original) - loose as can be! Never really noticed before as it's hidden behind the EGR cooler, acoustic/thermal cover and fan shroud. Suspect a small leak at the back as well as I have noticed condensed oil droplets underneath on the bell housing (?) and transmission area (not diesel, not coolant and not ATF - definitely oil). Might have to check the rocker cover seal (installed new one 12 months ago), but guess it could also be the rear camshaft seal; apparently it's nigh impossible to get to the rear seal I hear (also not regarded as a likely leak spot?).

Best way is to get the engine steam cleaned off.... then look from where its coming from. Leave the top and rear acoustic covers off for a while...

Buying viton seal (BS330) from CBC Bearings here in Melbourne - pick-up for AUD 11.69 (includes GST) - takes a day or two for them to get it in. Will pop this on the current cap (original), smear it with a bit of clean engine oil and see how it goes. Thinking this is definitely the cheapest (and best) option.

Great pic! That rear seal just looks impossible to access/replace without the engine out!? Wonder what the difference is between the front and rear camshaft seals and why it is reported that the rear seal very rarely leaks (unlike the front one)?

Will add this to my list. Was always a bit wary of steam cleaning - potential damage to mechanical components (water ingress) and electrics (cooked wiring)? Worrying too much?

Just the oily bits... I just used a can of brake cleaner, some engine cleaner, a paint brush, and a jetwash.. but it worked.

All good - new viton seal installed re-using the original LR plastic cap. Just a smear of engine oil on the o-ring and and it went in like a treat - nice positive seal now. Picked up the BS330 viton o-ring locally for AUD 11.69. Old o-ring was squared off, hard and brittle - cracked when I removed it with the pick!

A lot of mechanics use silicone or rtv sealant on that cam cover. One i spoke to reckons on some td5s its the only way to sort it. Hope yours stays fixed.
