I have 1999 diesel freelander from new that has covered 71,000 miles and has developed an oil leak from the drain hole between engine and gear box.My garage suspected rear main engine crankshaft oil seal and on gearbox removal found clutch oil contanimated. They obviously replaced clutch and oil seal but their is still an oil leak and so has to go back to garage,I am not sure where they are going to go from here, when i suggested gearbox oil seal they said that would be a strip down job, I do not thimk it is worth that.
Any ideas
Paul

71000 miles, that's lasted well for a Freelander.
Is it too early to tell if this oil leak will again contaminate the clutch? If it won't then I'd just leave it be. Is it losing much oil?

A couple of teaspoon fulls but a liitle oil makes an awfull mess especially on a tarmac drive.I could ignore it but having had a garage supposedly fix it and I know they removed the gearbox and changed the clutch and crankshaft oil seal because they invited me to go and see they are going to give me a bill for something that is still not right.Hence my question what else it might be.I was thinking to work out engine or gearbox leak to put a colour dye in the oil of one of them to see what comes out but not very practical.

I think the trouble with a lot of garages is that they repair what they THINK is broken, trial and error stlye.
You have to prove that they repaired a part that was not in need of repairing. A very tough thing to prove as they will say it was leaking from 2 places and they have repaired one of them.
I don't envy your position at the moment :(

Tiny is a 99 diesel and is celebrating her (touch wood) trouble free 155000th mile so don't tar em all with the same brush. She is not pampered either! 71000 miles is hardly run in is it? ;)
At first guess I would suspect the seal may have been damaged when they installed it - it is very easily done.
If you smell the oil and it STINKS its gearbox oil.
