Oil Leak.

Just found that the engine has used 1 litre of oil in 4 weeks and the culprit, so I'm told, is the oil cooler.
Is this part of the lower radiator and, if so, how easy is it to remove/replace?

Sorry, yep, it's a 2000 4.6 petrol auto.

Just found this useful diagram....but is the oil cooler (21?) actually part of the rad? As in can I buy it seperately?

Separate on the GEMS so assume it is on the Thor too?

Yes, oil cooler is separate from rad on Thor .

21 is the transmission oil cooler. 17 is the engine oil cooler. Make sure you get the right one for the 4.6 too, they are different to the 4.0.

Good idea to buy oil lines at the same time.

The nuts on the lines are steel, and the cooler is aluminium so they corrode together over time meaning you usually can't get the lines off without mashing the threads.

I'd go for brand new. I've just done mine, something like £100 for new cooler and lines from Island 4x4.

Took grill and striker plate off to see if I could spot the leak from the oil cooler and it seems that the oil cooler isn't the same as described in the diagram or online.
It's the same size as the main rad. And so is the gearbox cooler....

Ah, OK. so in this pic, front to back are air condenser, ? and main rad.

? is one rad again, same size as air condenser.

Mines a doosel so different but it only leaves engine and gearbox so follow pipe work, would thing engine cooler bigger than box one.

There are two small rads in the middle "section".

The top one is for the engine oil, then another under that for the gearbox oil cooling.

It's a three layer 4 rad sandwich.

Ah, Ok....does the air con rad have to come out to remove the oil cooler?

No. You unbolt the brackets that hold the top of the air con condenser on and then unbolt the oil cooler, after that it just slides out of the top.

You need to get and read a copy of RAVE. It's very easy to follow the instructions in there.
