Hi guys ..

I have a defender 110 td5 , 1998 , full service history for what its worth .. and about 111k on the clock ..., this is my first defender and just finding my way ..

I have noticed that I have a bit of a leak , I have topped up the oil about 1 ltr in 6 months , so not terrible but there is a leak ..

I have got under and had a good look, the leak is from the left side of the engine , there is oil on the sump , around the left side mainly, ..

The highest place with signs of leakage is near the screw in oil filter, and a hose from the turbo to the engine ..

Its hard to see where it is coming from exactly, I have cleaned everything up, but looks to be around this area , was wondering if there is any common/normal places what it could be .. Im just hoping that its nothing to sinister ...

cheers

The most common oil leak on a TD5 usually comes from the half moon rubber seal at the back of the rocker cover.
If there is no oil coming from that area after cleaning any existing oil up just keep an eye on it to see were the fresh oil is coming from,
May be from the centrifugal oil filter housing or pipes above the spin on filter. There is also an oil cooler on that side of the engine.

Make sure the spin on oil filter is tight. I had leak that I couldn't find the source of, I changed the Rocker Cover gasket- no change, then someone suggested the spin on oil filter. I was adamant I had tightened it sufficiently as 'I've done this thousands of times' but sure enough there was about an eighth of turn left in it. Nipped it up and hey - no more leak.

Do you mean the oil return pipe underneath the center of the turbo and which heads off towards the sump? If so it could be the gasket between the pipe and the turbo. However, given the temperature the turbo gets to I would have thought that a leak might also give some oil smoke in the engine bay when the engine is running.
Alternatively, do you mean the breather pipe that comes from the rocker cover that goes to the intake pipe just before the turbo? A split in this pipe would release oil and oil vapour onto the LHS of the engine probably at about the rate you discuss.

Hi .. I will double check the screw on filter today ..

The pipe I was talking about was the pipe under the turbo .. I will see if I can take a few photos today ..

I had another look today , and after I cleaned everything I could see traces of oil again .. looking up from underneath I can see drip / oil accumulated on the bottom of the screw on filter ..

I have checked the tightness and seemed tight ..

Just changed my oil and spin off filter, the oil filter was tight to remove. Also replaced the sump washer as it was seeping oil out but barely. Gave it roughly 7ltrs of oil as per what the manual states and it started leaking oil but not aggressively. Tightened the oil filter, started and checked under the car to see if the filter is leaking given the angle of the filter, no leaks. Noticed the oil pan wall on the driver side was leaking. concentrated in one area rather No leaks coming from the oil filter or above it. Does not leak with the engine off, roughly 7-9
seconds after ignition does it leak.

I attached photos below.

Truck has 154,000 km

Any advice here?

Turns out the oil filter housing gasket, given the leak time to the sump gasket from ignition was 8 seconds, I canceled out the sump gasket. Cleaned and traced the drip. Turned the car on and took a look under given the leak was very calm (I don’t recommend doing this as you can can burn your face with leaking oil if not sure where it is coming from, I did have protective goggles and a face shield on) noticed Oil leaking from the filter housing screw, is it possible it broke while I tried cranking to remove it ?

Just a thought did you check the o-ring from the old filter wasn't stuck to the gasket face ? I've seen leaks when you inadvertently end up with two oil filter o-rings trying to do the job of one ;)
