Title says it all really.

Was really surprised to see the oil from the sump being quite thick and not jet black but very slightly grey. Even more apparent when its sat in the catch tank for a while, almost like it has a grey slick in it which separates slightly.

This is a mild difference, not jump out at you different unless you catch it in the right light.

This is a landy i've only just picked up but having stripped the engine there's no head issue and certainly no water in it, if there was i know it won't act this way.

Any ideas guy's!!

this engine is stripped completely and all done indoors so i know its not water.
stripped because it exploded bottom end 1 hr down rd from buying.
looking for somewhere to get it annalised at moment for obvious reasons

engines csan have slight water leaks that lighten oil colour ,but an additivce of some form to hide worn motor low oil pressure/knock,is highly probable

Was it sat up for a while? Ive seen tiny amounts of "mayonnaise" in engines that have say for a while, I always put it down to condensation..

I've seen greyish silver oil that was caused by extremely fine metal flakes - could it be the bearing metal from your big end/crank bearing that probably went bang?

from what seller stated it was used daily so not sat up for anytime.
it could well be metal filings as the parts that gave out were well worn and mechanics are amazed it wasn't knocking loudly.

Appreciate the heads up on that mate, fortunately i have found one locally in a disco thats still running. It's being taken out tomorrow and should have it stood by mine ready for fitting by tomorrow night.
Probably be a couple days till i fit it as going to have a good clean up of bay etc first and have hospital appoints all day tomorrow.
Just got to sort the transfer box now as seems to have jammed up in hi ratio. Can't get it to move out.
Guess that will be a disco one going in also but no funds left for a min so not sure how or when.
