Oil covering pipe. Hose leak?

Hi, I wanted to ask what you guys thought could cause this corrugated pipe to be covered in engine oil (or diesel?) and collect lower down.

The location of the item concerned, is behind the large black Inter-cooler hose to the right hand side of the engine. E.g. to the right of the EGR Control Valve and behind it.. From looking at the Haynes Manual it might be called a Fuel Low Pressure Sensor or a pipe to do with that?

Is it possible the big pipe (intercooler) is leaking at the back (split), or do you think it could be a leak in the Fuel Low Pressure Sensor itself?

Either way, something drips down onto the corrugated plastic pipe covering it in oil, and covers some mechanics lower down.

had this on my td4 and thought the worst. Its engine oil leaking from the intercooler / egr pipework.

two choices. easiest is tighten all the jubilee clips up. really tight.

or remove all the hoses and the egr valve - clean out the pipework with brake cleaner or similar and the egr valve the same.

refit and tighten all clips. steam clean the engine off and then hope for the best!

Is it possible the EGR Valve gets full of debris over time maybe, becomes a bit clogged and so 'leaks', and this is the result?

E.g.a leak due to increased pressure, rather than an actual hole?

I read on a thread there's something called an EGR Bypass, maybe this is a fix and why people Bypass it. :confused2:

The EGR valve does definitely clog up, and removing it and cleaning it is definitely worthwhile. The bypass kit removes the obstruction of the internals of the valve, as it is a straight through pipe. When you remove the EGR valve, you will understand what this means. As for cleaning, I always use straight parafin, works a treat.

the plastic corrugated hose contaminated with oil is just a plastic covering to the wiring loom at that point, you would do well to clean as much as you can off.

the cause will almost definitely be the right angle intercooler hose immediately above it. The either split and then leak, or don't seal properly or leak, or as I have had the case, just go porous and leak, although not to the extent yours has.

land rover part no for the right angle hose is WAP000080 "Tube - Exhaust Gas Recirc", I paid about £8 inc. VAT from the main dealer. Or you could be extravigant and fit silicon hoses instead, at around £110 a set.

but you'll have no benefit from the silicon apart from it looks pretty!

i didn't bypass mine - cleaned all the gunk out and the difference is noticeable when driving. People by pass it (i think) so that it stops all the oily gunk getting chucked into the system.

one day i may get round to swilling out the intercooler as well!


either way its not something to worry about, clean it or by pass it either is good.
