Just had a huge row with my mechanic, he insists that I need 10W40 and not 5W40.
He reckons the engine is a TDi not a TDCi , fully synth would be to thin.
Opinions Please......

either will do - its fresh oil thats is more important - the only diff in the 2 above is its cold weather performance. Arguable a 10W would be better on an older engine.

He is right. You are not above the arctic circle. We have alot colder weather than what you have and in winter it's 10w30 for 5 months (nov-march) then 10w40 for rest of year. fully synth is a waste of money specially on older motors. If you had a high tolerance motor and started from new ok.

What happens is the synth will wash out what crud is stuck in the motor and then it will get in your bearings. What you have is a older style motor with different seals and bearing material made for deno oil. If you want you could borrow my hand gun and shoot your self in the foot know.

i think your mixing detergent levels with synthetic .the synthetic oils are produced for long life ,5w40 is what is recommended for moderate climates and 5w30 for cold 10w40 for hot ,to be honest it wouldnt make any difference

no i not a particulary big fan of synthetic ,mineral changed regulary is allright for me ,its not necessary and is used by manufacturers to lengthen service intervals which is not a brilliant idea

this is a long standing debate on oil type... Land Rove recommend a variety of oils and you can use any as long as they meet the oil specification laid out in your handbook/RAVE. Could there be an argument that thinner oil would improve MPG sightly?
