Well not my gearbox but something in there anyway. Driving into work this morning I heard something which sounds pretty much exactly the same as metal bangles around the front prop. The sound increases with rev/engine speed to the point it sounds like an electric saw. All gears still select ok and even in neutral when revved it will still make the sound. Some sort of input shaft maybe?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

i had the same problem check the washer where prop joins tranfer box my was clinging around

id check box oil pretty quick ,if it makes noise with vehicle stood and is engine speed your going to have to remove box asap it can be input shaft bearing but often difficulty of getting 4th gear accompanies likewise with lay shaft other issues occur too, it could be clutch breaking up but without more info or hearing its hard to say, either way box needs removing if it does only when vehicles moving then thats different set of possibilities

Without taking box off but draining oil what kind of thing could I see that would give me a clue? I don't have facility's to do the work myself and will be going away with work for a week and a half from Friday so I'd rather at least know what it is before I leave so I'm not coming back to have to worry about being without transport

i had the exact same thing to me i had only owned the car for 195 miles and thought it was the land rover way only to find out when driving that it was the layshaft so had to limp home in 4th gear all the way home and had to get a new gearbox so i would advise not to drive anymore and get it looked at.

Right having had more of a listen to it on the way home from work. The noise only seems to start above a certain RPM I.e if I'm in fifth and I sit at fifty its fine and I can't hear it but anything above that and the noise increases with engine speed. Still seems to drive, select gears etc... fine.

I recorded a sound file but can't upload it from my phone but basically it sounds like a band saw and can easily be heard above the engine (which is rather loud). I'd really appreciate if anyone could give me a bit more of an idea as to what's going on as a new box definitely isn't an option at this time

in which case it must be in gear box either input bearing or 1 or more of the 3 layshaft bearings, chek oil condition and level and dont do many miles

exactly the same as mine and it was the layshaft that broke be careful also it was down to the last owner obviously never changing gearbox oil as it had about half a pint of oil in wen i got it home hope im wrong. so good luck
