Has anyone done it? where to get maps? any ideas on the rules?
I would like to drive from Munich to Lake Garda in my IIA and would like to do as much of it off road as possible.
I have seen some comments here about driving in the alps but nothing specific to the Austrian alps.
Any pointers would be much appriciated.

Cheers

Hi,

I've done a bit of the Austrian Alps, like the Swiss Alps, plenty of well mapped routes, passes etc. Get a decent map ( I've found Michelin very good) from below and/or ask their advice, they show a lot of detail including unsurfaced roads/rough tracks.

Maps; Stanfords' Maps, Travel Books, Guides and Travel Information

Rules; don't know of any specific rules, apart from the usually you know - make sure any rough track is safe, don't leave litter etc etc. And obviously take the legally required; hi-viz, triangle etc etc. Different Countries have different rules. Check here; Driving requirements by country : AA touring tips. Local rules and advice for European countries - The AA

If your going Munich to Lake Garda, and take in any Austrian (on the way in) or Swiss motorways on the way out, you need a permit, some PO's do these or at a border control. Euros are widely accepted in Switzerland.

Hope this helps, have fun.

Cheers, Mark

@ Stacked it

I`m living where you want to go (near Innsbruck)
Off Road and even Greenlaning is nearly everywhere prohibited in my country.

It`s possible to drive in some areas in Italy but also there off road is getting more and more restricted.

But don`t mind, the Alps are also very beautyfull on the road.
