pm Hippo, he regularly trounces all other supposed "proper Landrovers" with his Freelander on real offroad circuits.

Someone called?

Freelanders do have their limitations, like any vehicle. Ground clearance is a bigger issue on a Freelander, than say a 90. But you can still have fun off road in a Freelander. A Freelander with traction control and hill decent control etc is better than one without it. Also slightly rougher tyres will help. Too rough and on road performance drops a bit. As said above, lifts etc can be done. Auto box makes up for not having a low ratio off road.

I would be the first to admit my Hippo has certain limitations, which other Land Rovers products don’t suffer from as much, as they’re bigger, stronger, and certainly more capable off road. Neither am I too proud or envious of them to admit this. But if I saw one of these amazing vehicles stuck, it wouldn’t put me off pulling them out, having over herd the word “gaylander” moments earlier.

I think the bloke in the bobble hat was caught short. :)

Strange bob never made a comment on the above post? :p

Agreed they do have limitations but with a few simple mods can often show "real:rolleyes:" 4x4s up... Definitely avoid anything with 1.8 engine or manual box if you plan on anything more than simple lanes (but have to admit even they are a lot more capable than you would think)

With a lift and bigger tyres you will have more clearance than standard 90 and no diffs to worry about....completely different style of driving to any other 4x4....

Agree totally Hippo, though I still think those that call them Gaylanders are secretly envious :D
I do admire the other Landies as well, just don't let those tractor guys know.

I lend my support to the Landrover Freelander also. It employs a different design concept to the others in the range because it was aimed at a different market. However, it is still a Landrover and it is still better than a lot of those other 4x4 imitations out there that can't even run 4WD on the road.

Not very often do i come on to this type of debate [snort] but i have driven a gaylander off road fer quite a few years, and even wiff bog standard tyres ,this motor is the leader in the soft road brigade, even die hard tratter boys [LR only] have bin well impressed by the performance with the gaylander, and so with a few basic mods this can be a reet oft road machine, but as stated the more you mod fer orft road the poorer tarmac drive is. . . . . . . . . . . . .got to go un polish ma black leffer arm rest now . . . .doop de dum de doo:nothingtoadd: :alien: :behindsofa:

come on Ming - we know you just fantasise about yo gaylander, like you do your rocket etc.
We have nevva seen yo hippo or even you. You and yo hippo are just figments of Ratties perverted brain.

The Freelanders did surprise me with their off road ability when we S*L*U*Ts did our recent 'Newbie Trip' on Salisbury Plain.
They have limitations where it is deeply rutted but on wet grass they are pretty much unstoppable......
Each to their own guys.....each to their own...... :tea:
