Hi all,

Thinking of getting a reversing camera for the p38. Anyone got any experience of doing this and any recommendations for good ones or ones to avoid?

Depends what you want for display. Three main options are:

1) replace the rear view mirror, but you lose the auto-dim capability (unless the aftermarket one does it)
2) standalone display unit on the dash somewhere
3) install an Android stereo, etc.

In all three case you need to put the camera somewhere. My green P38 has a camera like this mounted on the number plate light on upper tailgate, and a 7" Android in the dash where the cubby used to be. My blue P38 has reverse sensors the prev owner installed, but the beeper sounder is a bit hit & miss. I suspect 1 or 2 sensors are knackered, so I don't use it.

Thanks - your Green P38 sounds like exactly what I'm after. What did you use for the camera and for the dash screen?

I mounted the camera in the tailgate light section above the two-bar. Very useful for towing. I have a standalone screen on the dash but have to fold it flat for the MoT test.

Possibly the sat-nav unit might be repurposed if you have one. I suspect it is the American spec feed. Cannot recall was they call it, NTSC with RGB?

Towing is one thing I want it for. keeping an eye on a trailer. Which camera did you use?

Thanks. But i’m not sure that I want to substitute a camera for my rear mirror. Cameras are unreliable and where i use them, likely to get covered in mud, whereas i can always rely on my mirror.

Yeah, the ones I got (put a forward facing one in the front bumper at wading depth) were supposed to be waterproof but conked out in the first river crossing. They did come back online when they dried out but a few more dunkings and the front one failed.

I'd suggest you need IP88 or whatever it is for truly waterproof. It sure as hell isn't IP68.

Thinking about something like this - ignore the fact its 2U and obviously won't fit - lets just assume for now that it will. Anyone tried one of these?
